The Los Angeles Angels (48-46) hope to earn another series win over the Los Angeles Dodgers (51-42) when they visit them as solid road underdogs for the opener on Friday at Chavez Ravine.
The Angels just took two of three from the Dodgers last weekend at home, and they have now won eight of the past 12 meetings in the rivalry, according to the OddsShark MLB Database.
MLB betting pick, via OddsShark computer: 3.8-3.6, Angels (MLB picks on every game)
Why the Angels can pay on the MLB lines
The Angels are trying to do everything they can to float above the .500 mark and give themselves a chance to compete for a playoff spot in the second half of the season.
While that seems like a long shot right now, they have won their last two series after following up their victory against the Dodgers with another over the Seattle Mariners.
The Angels will also have a pitcher going to the mound here in Felix Pena (1-0, 3.63 ERA) who was on the hill when they beat the Dodgers 3-2 a week ago, allowing just two runs and three hits in 5.1 innings with one walk and a season-high eight strikeouts.
Why the Dodgers can pay on the MLB lines
Make no doubt about it, the Dodgers are still the superior team in this matchup, and the records back that up.
Young righty Walker Buehler (4-2, 3.44) was not available the last time these teams met, and he is prepared to make his first start since June 28 in this spot after recovering from a rib injury.
The 23-year-old is coming off a five-inning simulated game on Sunday and could be on a pitch count based on how he performed in his last start for the Dodgers. In that outing, he surrendered five runs and five hits in 1.1 innings of an 11-5 home loss to the Chicago Cubs.
Before that, though, he had given up only one run in three of his previous four starts, with three of them resulting in wins.
Smart betting pick
It is tough to take the Dodgers on the moneyline, paying a large price to back a starting pitcher returning from an injury.
However, there is a lot of value on the runline considering the previous 10 wins for the Dodgers over the Angels have all been decided by two runs or more.
For that reason, take the Dodgers to cover the runline at home.
