Why the Diamondbacks can pay on the MLB lines
Arizona's offense may be hurting a bit literally without outfielder A.J. Pollock in the lineup, but New York's is in even worse shape with outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (right quad) and third baseman Todd Frazier (hamstring) both on the disabled list.
The Diamondbacks also have the healthier starting pitcher in Zack Godley (4-2, 4.08 ERA), who has gone 4-1 with a 3.40 ERA in seven outings under the lights this season. Last year against the Mets, Godley also went 0-1 in two starts but had a solid 2.31 ERA and limited them to a .128 batting average with 12 strikeouts in 11.2 innings of work.
Why the Mets can pay on the MLB lines
While it is true that New York starter Jacob deGrom (3-0, 1.83 ERA) may not be the healthier of the two pitchers in this matchup, he does remain the better of them. DeGrom is coming off an elbow injury and threw only 45 pitches last time out in one inning versus the Philadelphia Phillies, walking three and striking out two in his return to action.
DeGrom has faced Arizona just once in the previous three seasons combined as well, earning a win after allowing two earned runs and five hits in seven innings, with three walks and 10 strikeouts back in 2015. That victory started a four-game series winning streak.
Smart betting pick
Since beating the Diamondbacks four straight times three years ago, the Mets have dropped 11 of the past 13 meetings, according to the OddsShark MLB Database.
Last season, Arizona took six of seven from New York, including three of four at Citi Field. The Diamondbacks are still the better team overall, and they will be primed to start their road trip off on the right foot with a key win in the series opener here against the Mets.
