Justin Verlander Throws Complete-Game Shutout vs. Angels, Cuts ERA to 1.05

Alec NathanMay 16, 2018

Justin Verlander is on another level this season.

That much was clear Wednesday night when the Houston Astros ace twirled a complete-game five-hit gem in a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

Verlander, who's now 5-2 on the season, lowered his ERA to 1.05 following the dominant start. According to the Los Angeles Times' Bill Shaikin, that would be the lowest ERA in the past 100 years if it holds up through the end of the season.

The current record over the past century belongs to Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, who posted a 1.12 ERA over 34 starts in 1968.

Verlander also joined an exclusive club Wednesday.

With the Astros up a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Verlander struck out Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani swinging for his 2,500th career strikeout.

Verlander is now one of two active pitchers, along with New York Yankees right-hander CC Sabathia, who has logged at least 2,500 K's.

Through 10 starts this season, the 35-year-old has logged 84 strikeouts compared to 14 walks.

He'll enjoy the weekend off before returning to the bump next week as the Astros try to strengthen their grip on the top spot in the American League West.
