Report: Hornets, Michael Jordan to Interview James Borrego, Jay Larranaga for HC

Tyler ConwayMay 5, 2018

The Charlotte Hornets are set to interview James Borrego and Jay Larranaga for a second time for their vacant head coaching position.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the news, noting Hornets owner Michael Jordan will take part in the second interviews.

Borrego is currently an assistant under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, while Larranaga is part of Brad Stevens' coaching staff in Boston.

Borrego has spent more than a decade on the Spurs bench in his two stints with the team. He also served as an assistant for the then-New Orleans Hornets and the Orlando Magic, spending 30 games as the Magic's interim coach in 2015. Orlando went 10-20 during his short tenure.

Popovich's bench has undoubtedly been the most popular this offseason as teams look to fill their vacancies. Borrego, Becky Hammon, Ettore Messina and Ime Udoka have all been tapped for various jobs throughout the league. Monty Williams, the Spurs' current vice president of basketball operations, is also a head coaching candidate.

Larranaga is seen as perhaps the NBA's best defensive mind among assistant coaches. He's been instrumental in installing the Celtics system under Stevens that's made them one of the league's most cohesive units despite injury. The Celtics had the NBA's best defensive rating during the regular season, per NBA.com.

Whoever winds up coaching the Hornets next will have their work cut out. Charlotte has finished 36-46 each of the last two years despite having a capped-out roster full of bit parts. The Hornets have jettisoned both general manager Rich Cho and head coach Steve Clifford in an effort to revamp their outlook.

New general manager Mitch Kupchak comes with a bevy of experience and a mostly strong resume from his time with the Los Angeles Lakers. But both he and his first coach will need patience from Jordan to undo the mess of the last couple years.
