Why the Indians can pay on the MLB lines

Cleveland kicks off a five-game road trip in New York coming off a split of a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. The Indians won the second game 13-4 after losing the first 13-11 to the Blue Jays in 11 innings, and they have now alternated wins and losses in their past six.

The last time the Indians hit the road, the went 4-2 on a six-game trip against the Minnesota Twins and Baltimore Orioles, and they have won the previous three regular-season meetings at Yankee Stadium as well by a combined score of 17-7.

Cleveland is hoping Josh Tomlin (0-4, 9.16 ERA) can turn around his season by picking up his first win, as he was better on the road a year ago.

Why the Yankees can pay on the MLB lines

New York returns home following a successful seven-game road trip that saw the team go 6-1, with the lone loss coming at Houston in the opener of that series. The Yankees have really turned it on lately, going 12-1 in their last 13 to pull within one game of the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox, who visit them next after the Indians.

The Yankees outscored the Astros 14-5 in winning the last three games and had an almost identical combined margin of victory (13-5) when they took three in a row from the two-time defending AL Central champions in the playoffs last October.

Smart betting pick

It would seem to be a no-brainer to take New York in this spot, especially with veteran CC Sabathia (2-0, 1.71) on the hill against his former team and opposite a struggling pitcher in Tomlin. However, Sabathia is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in his last four starts versus Cleveland dating back to 2015, and the price is too high to back him.

Before losing the past three matchups with the Yankees last postseason, the Indians went 7-2 in the previous nine meetings, according to the OddsShark MLB Database. Look for Cleveland to cool off New York and hand Sabathia his first loss as a big underdog.
