Hyun-Jin Ryu's Groin Injury Diagnosed as Torn off Bone, Placed on 10-Day DL

Joseph ZuckerMay 3, 2018

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 10-day disabled list with a left groin strain, the team announced Thursday.

The Athletic's Pedro Moura reported Ryu's groin muscle tore off the bone, thus necessitating his trip to the DL.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Thursday the team believes Ryu's injury is significant enough he could be out until after the 2018 All-Star break, per SportsNet LA's Alanna Rizzo.

Ryu started Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks and exited in the second inning. Pedro Baez, Daniel Hudson, Tony Cingrani, Josh Fields and Kenley Jansen combined to finish the game.

Rizzo reported Walker Buehler is likely to take Ryu's spot in the starting rotation. A first-round draft pick in 2015, Buehler has allowed two earned runs in 10 innings this year. He finished 3-3 with a 3.35 ERA in 28 minor league appearances in 2017.

Ryu's injury gives the Dodgers an opportunity to elevate one of their most promising pitchers, but Los Angeles now has three starters on the disabled list between Ryu, Rich Hill and Julio Urias. That won't make things easier for the team following a disappointing 13-17 start to the season.
