Suns HC Rumors: James Borrego, Steve Clifford Interview for Position

Kyle NewportApr 27, 2018

As the Phoenix Suns continue to search for their next head coach, a couple of more candidates have emerged.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, former Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford and San Antonio Spurs assistant coach James Borrego have met with team officials this week.

It was a rough season for Phoenix, which finished with the worst record (21-61) in the NBA. Earl Watson was fired just three games into the season, and Jay Triano was given the interim tag for the remainder of the season with the opportunity to interview for the full-time gig after the season.

Clifford spent more than a decade bouncing around the league as an assistant before getting his first shot as a head coach with Charlotte in 2013. He went 196-214 in five seasons in Buzz City, making the playoffs twice.

The 56-year-old missed more than a month this past season after taking a leave of absence to focus on his health. He was relieved of his duties earlier this month.

Borrego has been an assistant coach in the NBA since 2003, spanning four different organizations. He also was the interim coach for the Orlando Magic during the 2014-15 season and went 10-20 over the course of 30 games. He has been with San Antonio in the three seasons since.

The 40-year-old appears to be a hot name in the coaching circle at the moment. Wojnarowski reported earlier this week Borrego was in the mix for the Atlanta Hawks' vacancy.

Phoenix general manager Ryan McDonough is on the record of saying the team will pay up in order to land their choice of coach.
