NFL Draft 2018: Team-by-Team Analysis and Grades for Round 1 Results

Paul KasabianApr 27, 2018

The long-awaited 2018 NFL draft has one round in the books, as 32 players were selected Thursday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

As host Trey Wingo noted on ESPN's NFL draft broadcast, the first round began with a Heisman Trophy winner being picked (Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield) and ended with another Heisman Trophy winner going off the board (Louisville's Lamar Jackson).

It was an interesting night filled with some big trades and surprising moves. Day 2 takes place Friday and features the second and third rounds. Until then, here's the draft tracker, some grades and further analysis on eight teams.

The Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs traded away their first-round picks.

Arizona Cardinals: A

The Arizona Cardinals only needed to give up a third-rounder and fifth-rounder to move up five spots to pick UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen, whom some people—including Josh Norris of Rotoworld—ranked as the top signal-caller in the draft.

The pressure is off him early, with Sam Bradford running the show in 2018, but Arizona is a good spot for Rosen as he can pick the brain of future Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald, one of the most respected veterans in American professional sports.

Atlanta Falcons: A

Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley immediately becomes part of the most dangerous wideout trio in football alongside Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu. He should be utilized early to help take the burden off Jones, who is frequently double-teamed and targeted on passing plays.

One could also argue the three wideouts plus the running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman make up the best skill-position unit in the game.

Baltimore Ravens: A

The Baltimore Ravens would have received an A based off the pick of South Carolina tight end Hayden Hurst alone, but trading back into the first round to land Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson was the icing on the cake.

With incumbent signal-caller Joe Flacco averaging just 5.7 yards per attempt last year, Jackson may soon take the reins of the offense (in Flacco's defense, his pass-catching corps suffered numerous injuries last year).

Buffalo Bills: B

The Buffalo Bills landed their franchise quarterback in Wyoming's Josh Allen, but they gave up two second-rounders to move up five slots. That seems like a steep price for a quarterback numerous people, including Dan Graziano of ESPN.com, feel is boom or bust. Still, Allen's rocket arm is second to none, and he has the size (6'5", 237 pounds) teams covet.

Time will tell whether Allen is the right choice, but Buffalo got a steal at No. 16 in Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who ranked sixth on Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network's big board. He could end up being the steal of the draft. Remarkably, Edmunds doesn't turn 20 until May.

Carolina Panthers: A

With the trade of Kelvin Benjamin last season, coupled with Curtis Samuel's season-ending ankle injury, the Carolina Panthers have question marks in their pass-catching corps.

Adding D.J. Moore out of Maryland should help. The former Terrapin caught 80 passes for 1,033 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He should be the team's third wide receiver and could even move into a starting role alongside Devin Funchess by season's end.

Chicago Bears: A

The guess here is the Chicago Bears are the NFC's dark-horse playoff team next year, and that's in part because of smart offseason moves like the first-round pickup of Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith, who Lance Zierlein of NFL.com noted could become a Pro Bowl-caliber player.

Smith was incredible for the Bulldogs last season, amassing 137 tackles and 6.5 sacks. He seems like a great fit for an old-school team and could be the team's next Hall of Fame defensive player.

Cincinnati Bengals: A

The Cincinnati Bengals need to shore up an offensive line that ranked in the bottom half of the NFL in pass protection and run blocking last season, per Football Outsiders. Taking Ohio State interior lineman Billy Price is a sharp selection.

Price tore his pectoral while lifting during the NFL Scouting Combine, but his doctor expects him to be healthy in time for training camp. If that holds, Price should find himself starting Week 1.

Cleveland Browns: B

The Cleveland Browns took their quarterback when they selected Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall. He should be in line to start in 2019. Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward, the fourth overall pick, should see the field right away.

The guess here is Mayfield finally brings some continuity to the quarterback position in Cleveland. Ward is excellent, but picking North Carolina State edge-rusher Bradley Chubb and putting him on the same line as Myles Garrett would have made the Browns' first round the best of the night.
