Cedric Alexander Retains Cruiserweight Title vs. Kalisto at Greatest Royal Rumble

Mike ChiariApr 27, 2018

In his first defense of the Cruiserweight Championship since winning it at WrestleMania 34, Cedric Alexander retained against Kalisto at the Greatest Royal Rumble in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Friday.

In the closing moments of a match that was an athletic showcase for both Superstars, Alexander reversed the Salida del Sol into a Lumbar Check before pinning Kalisto.

WWE tweeted a video showing some of the remarkable feats Alexander and Kalisto accomplished throughout the contest:

Alexander impressively worked his way through a tournament for the vacant Cruiserweight title, and he met Mustafa Ali in the tournament final on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

While Alexander prevailed in an entertaining, back-and-forth match, it was announced shortly thereafter that he would have a challenge on his hands at the Greatest Royal Rumble.

To determine the No. 1 contender, a gauntlet match was held on 205 Live. While Ali was the favorite, it was Kalisto who outlasted him, Drew Gulak, TJP and Tony Nese to earn a shot at Alexander's title.

Beating four Superstars was an impressive accomplishment on Kalisto's part, but Alexander entered the Greatest Royal Rumble on arguably the biggest roll of his career.

Alexander was essentially unbeatable leading up to WrestleMania, and he seemed destined to win the Cruiserweight Championship after Enzo Amore was released and forced to vacate the title.

Kalisto wasn't initially part of the cruiserweight division, but after getting moved to 205 Live, he started to hit his stride again and became a vital part of the show.

He was somewhat lost after losing the United States Championship in 2016, however, the move to the cruiserweight division reinvigorated him and led to a Cruiserweight Championship reign last year when he beat Enzo.

That run lasted less than two weeks, though, and Kalisto has attempted to scratch and claw his way back into the title scene ever since.

He finally got his chance on a huge stage at the Greatest Royal Rumble, and he pushed Alexander to the limit.

Although Kalisto came close to returning to the top of the mountain in the cruiserweight division, Alexander continued his hot streak and will now be on the lookout for new challengers.

There is no shortage of talent in the division, but after what they did at WrestleMania, a rematch between Alexander and Ali is something the WWE Universe could get behind.
