The Undertaker Beats Rusev in Casket Match at WWE Greatest Royal Rumble

Mike ChiariApr 27, 2018

The Undertaker beat Rusev in his signature casket match at the Greatest Royal Rumble in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Friday.

Rusev got in his fair share of offense and had help from Aiden English, but The Phenom eventually managed to subdue both men and shut them each inside the casket.

As WWE Universe shared, Rusev was out of his element in such a macabre environment:

After going a full year without competing, The Undertaker returned to action at WrestleMania 34 in an impromptu clash with John Cena.

Cena called out The Deadman on multiple occasions leading up to WrestleMania, but it wasn't until the Showcase of the Immortals that Taker finally appeared and accepted.

The Undertaker needed only a few minutes to vanquish Cena in a relative squash match, which led to whispers that he could be in line for more matches in the future.

Those whispers became a reality shortly after WrestleMania when he was announced as a participant in a casket match against Rusev at the Greatest Royal Rumble.

That contest almost didn't happen, though, since WWE later changed things up and announced that The Undertaker would instead face Chris Jericho.

Another change meant The Undertaker versus Rusev was back on, however, representing one of the biggest opportunities of the Bulgarian Brute's career.

Rusev has enjoyed some success in WWE as a multi-time United States champion, but maintaining momentum has proved difficult for him in recent years.

He is perhaps more popular now than ever before with arenas all over the world chanting "Rusev Day," although that hasn't led to a push up the card.

Rusev took the fall in a Fatal 4-Way match for the U.S. title at WrestleMania 34, and he continues to be positioned as a heel rather than a babyface despite the obvious fact that the WWE Universe is very much behind him.

Even so, Rusev was placed under the spotlight on a big stage against The Undertaker on Friday, and it gave him a chance to show what he could do against one of the biggest legends in WWE history.

While The Undertaker is at the tail end of his career and is no longer capable of putting on long, technically amazing matches, his mere presence gives a rub to anyone who steps into the ring with him.

That was the case Friday, and even though Rusev came out on the losing end, WWE trusting him to face a Superstar of The Undertaker's caliber suggests there could be more major opportunities in his future.
