The NFL continues to contest games in England's capital on an annual basis. The question remains whether the city could eventually get a full-time franchise.
In April 2016, commissioner Roger Goodell called the idea "realistic."
"We're still trying to make sure we can do it from a proper competitive standpoint," he told reporters. "You don't want to put a team over there and have them at a competitive disadvantage. And then the logistics, how you work that out. That's not easy."
Albert Breer of The MMQB reported in September that NFL executive vice president of international Mark Waller views 2022 as a reasonable target date for a London team.
"Absolutely," he said. "And that aligns well from a CBA and union standpoint—that would need to be part of a union agreement. Not to say we couldn't bargain it separately, but obviously, if we're doing it around that time, that would make sense. And from a media/broadcast standpoint, we'd need to think it through. It feels to me like all the indicators are there, showing that's still a realistic timeframe."
The league has played 21 games in London and two in Mexico City since the NFL International Series debuted in 2007.
Along with this season's London games, highlighted by an appearance from reigning Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles, another showdown in Mexico is also scheduled, as the Kansas City Chiefs will battle the Los Angeles Rams in November.
