2018 NFL Draft Rumors: Roundup of Latest Buzz Around the League
We've reached the point in the NFL draft process where the minute details matter the most.
After months of breaking down film and conducting interviews with prospects, NFL front offices have less than three weeks to finalize their draft boards and go after the players they think are the best fits for their respective teams.
When it comes to the most important decisions in the draft, which begins with the first round April 26 at AT&T Stadium, franchises have to double- and triple-check their research to make sure they don't waste a high pick on a prospect who is going to fizzle out in a few years.
No position comes under more scrutiny than quarterback, especially in the weeks and months leading up to the 2018 NFL draft, as four elite prospects could be selected in the top five, with another potentially going in the first round.
The Cleveland Browns face the most pressure of any team in the draft, as they hold all the power with the No. 1 and No. 4 picks.
Cleveland is expected to take a quarterback with one of its selections, but who that will be remains to be seen.
The Browns will host Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen Thursday and Louisville signal-caller Lamar Jackson Friday as part of their draft preparation, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport:
Over on the East Coast, the New York Giants and New York Jets, who sit second and third behind the Browns, are hosting Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield early this week, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
Mayfield entered the evaluation process at a bit of a disadvantage because of the public perception surrounding his behavior on and off the field.
The Oklahoma quarterback appears to have put those concerns to rest, as teams continue to come away impressed from their meetings with Mayfield, per Yahoo Sports' Jordan Schultz:
USC quarterback Sam Darnold spent time with the Browns last week, and UCLA's Josh Rosen is making the rounds in New York this week, as Rapoport noted:
While the focus is understandably on the quarterback class, there are plenty of other prospects making the rounds as the draft inches closer.
The Green Bay Packers are doing plenty of draft research under new general manager Brian Gutekunst, who brought in a plethora of defensive prospects, including Washington defensive tackle Vita Vea last week, per Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The New England Patriots, who moved up to No. 23 in the Brandin Cooks trade with the Los Angeles Rams, are bringing LSU running back Derrius Guice for a visit, per FanRag Sports' Jon Ledyard:
In the coming days and weeks, more visits will be taken by players in the talent pool to talk to prospective suitors, as the anticipation for the start of the first round continues to grow.
