Chargers Draft Rumors: LA Met with Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen
The Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly doing their due diligence with some of the top quarterbacks in the 2018 NFL draft.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Bolts have already met with or privately worked out Wyoming's Josh Allen, Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield and Louisville's Lamar Jackson.
Rapoport later reported the team is expected to host Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold as well.
Rapoport added the Chargers have acted similarly leading up to the past two or three drafts.
Starting quarterback Philip Rivers is still performing at a high level, but he will turn 37 near the end of the 2018 season.
Rivers is coming off a season that saw him complete 62.6 percent of his passes for 4,515 yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions en route to his seventh Pro Bowl.
His 10 picks were his fewest in a single season since he threw nine in 2009.
The Chargers narrowly missed the playoffs last year by going 9-7, and they are in a difficult position from a draft perspective.
Surrounding Rivers with more talent could make them under-the-radar contenders in 2018, but failing to find his eventual replacement may set Los Angeles further back whenever Rivers retires.
The Chargers hold the No. 17 overall selection in the 2018 NFL draft, which means it is unlikely they will land Allen or Mayfield unless they trade up.
Jackson is a possibility, although it is far from certain he'll be on the board since there are so many quarterback-needy teams ahead of them.
Bleacher Report's Matt Miller predicted in his latest mock draft the Chargers will provide Rivers with further protection by taking Texas offensive lineman Connor Williams with the No. 17 overall pick.
