Fred Hoiberg Out for Wizards vs. Bulls Due to Illness, Jim Boylen to Serve as HC
Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg will miss Sunday's game against the Washington Wizards due to illness, the team announced.
According to NBC Sports Chicago's Vincent Goodwill, Hoiberg has an upper respiratory infection. Associate head coach Jim Boylen will assume head coaching duties for the game.
Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford and Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue have both taken extended leaves of absence for health reasons this season. In an interview with The Athletic's Darnell Mayberry, Hoiberg discussed how he's "probably not cautious enough" with his health having undergone open heart surgery in the past.
"To see what other coaches have gone through, this is a very stressful position," Hoiberg said. "There's a lot of sleepless nights when you lose a game and you think there's something you could have done. It just eats away at you. And the stress is a hard thing to deal with."
The Bulls have Monday off before facing off with the Charlotte Hornets Tuesday, which would allow Hoiberg time to recover before his team's next game.
After Sunday, Chicago only has five more games remaining in the 2017-18 regular season. The Bulls are tied for the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference (25-51), and they have the seventh-best lottery odds in the 2018 draft, according to Tankathon.
