Miami Open Masters 2018: Men's Semifinals Scores, Updated Finals Schedule
The men's final is set for the 2018 Miami Open.
The two men's semifinal showdowns highlighted the Friday slate after Sloane Stephens beat Victoria Azarenka and Jelena Ostapenko ousted Danielle Collins in the women's semifinals Thursday.
John Isner beat Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets to start the Friday action, while Alexander Zverev handled Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets as well.
With that in mind, here is a look at the scores from the two matches, as well as an updated finals schedule for the Miami Open.
Friday's Scores
(14) John Isner def. (5) Juan Martin del Potro, 6-1, 7-6(2)
(4) Alexander Zverev def. (16) Pablo Carreno Busta, 7-6(4), 6-2
Updated Finals Schedule
According to the Miami Open's official website, Isner and Zverev will square off in the men's final on Sunday with the session starting at 1 p.m. ET. Stephens and Ostapenko will face each other in the women's final on Saturday with the session starting at 1 p.m. ET.
Friday's Action
It appeared as if Isner would cruise to a spot in the final when he steamrolled del Potro in the first set, 6-1. He dictated the pace with his powerful serve, never allowing the Argentine a legitimate opportunity to convert a break and get momentum back on his side.
To del Potro's credit, he found his own serve in the second set and forced a tiebreak, but Isner only gave up two points in the extra action to win the match.
According to the ATP World Tour's website, Isner notched 13 aces to just four for del Potro and won a commanding 83 percent of his first-service points. He also didn't even face a break point throughout the match, underscoring just how dominant he was when he was in control of his service games.
As a result, he only needed to win two break points to advance in straight sets.
Isner is 0-3 in ATP Masters 1000 finals, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com), but he can turn that mark around if he replicates his performance with his serve in Sunday's match against Zverev.
Unlike Isner, Zverev was challenged in the opening set and needed a tightly contested tiebreak to seize early momentum. Busta saved multiple break points in the first set to give himself the opportunity to move ahead, but Zverev came through with the set hanging in the balance.
From there, Zverev notched two early breaks in the second set to cruise to a straight sets win and set up a showdown with Isner in the final.
While the victor didn't have the sheer number of aces Isner did in the first match with 10, he controlled the match with his serve and won 88 percent of his first-service points, per the ATP World Tour website.
It will be a showdown of formidable serves in the final given the semifinals performances, but Zverev enjoys a 3-0 advantage in career matches with Isner, per the ATP World Tour website.
If he wins 88 percent of his first-service points again, he will move to 4-0.
