NHL Playoff Picture 2018: Complete Standings, Bracket and Wild-Card Race

Steve SilvermanMar 31, 2018

The NHL playoff picture is changing daily, and it is likely to continue to do so until the regular season ends April 8.

The Tampa Bay Lightning moved back into first place in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference after beating the New York Rangers 7-3 Friday night at Madison Square Garden.

That victory moved the Lightning on to 108 points, one more than the Boston Bruins. Boston had jumped over Tampa Bay when the Bruins beat the Lightning 4-2 on Thursday.

"We got better as the game went along," Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos said, per the Associated Press (h/t CBSSports.com). "We wanted to get the two points, and we got [them], and we'll continue to move on."

The Bruins will be back in action Saturday afternoon, when they host the Florida Panthers. If they can beat the playoff hopefuls, they will regain the division lead. The Bruins also have two games in hand on the Lightning.

While a victory would mean a lot to Boston, it would mean even more to the Panthers. Florida is three points behind the New Jersey Devils for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Panthers have a game in hand on the Devils, and three of their remaining games are with the streaking Bruins. That could make it difficult for Florida to catch New Jersey in the playoff chase.

Here is a look at the standings, and below are the current postseason matchups, via NHL.com:

Eastern Conference

Tampa Bay Lightning (1) vs. New Jersey Devils (Wild Card 2)

Boston Bruins (2) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (3)

Washington Capitals (1) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (Wild Card 1)

Pittsburgh Penguins (2) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (3)

Western Conference

Nashville Predators (1) vs. St. Louis Blues (Wild Card 2)

Winnepeg Jets (2) vs. Minnesota Wild (3)

Vegas Golden Knights (1) vs. Anaheim Ducks (Wild Card 1)

San Jose Sharks (2) vs. Los Angeles Kings (3)

The Lightning, Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs are assured of the top three spots in the Atlantic Division, but the order is not set.

The Washington Capitals are in first place in the Metropolitan Division, and they are being chased by the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Philadelphia Flyers sit in the No. 1 wild-card spot.

The Capitals have clinched a playoff spot, and it seems likely that Pittsburgh, Columbus and Philadelphia are in, leaving New Jersey and Florida to fight it out for the remaining playoff spot.

The Nashville Predators and Winnipeg Jets have clinched their playoff spots in the Central Division of the Western Conference. Nashville has 111 points and has the inside track on the Presidents' Trophy. The Minnesota Wild are in third place in the division, and while they have not clinched a playoff spot, they appear to have an excellent chance of getting in.

The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the St. Louis Blues 4-3 in overtime Friday night on a goal by Jonathan Marchessault. The expansion team has 105 points and will clinch the Pacific Division with the next point it gains. That could come as early as Saturday, when the Golden Knights host the San Jose Sharks.

The Sharks are in second place in the division, and the Los Angeles Kings, who dropped an overtime decision to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday, are in third.

The Ducks are in the first wild-card spot with 93 points, one less than the Kings. The Blues are in the second wild-card position with 92. That's the same number of points as the Colorado Avalanche, who were 5-0 winners over the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday. The Blues are inside the playoff structure because they have a game in hand on the Avs.

The Kings, Ducks, Blues and Avs are fighting for playoff spots, and one of those teams is not going to get into the postseason.
