Miami Open Masters 2018 Results: Wednesday Scores, Bracket and Schedule

Tim DanielsMar 28, 2018

The 2018 Miami Open rolled on Wednesday with quarterfinal action in both the men's and women's draws from the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Although upsets at the Miami Masters have knocked out many of the world's best players, including top seeds Roger Federer and Simona Halep, there is still plenty of star power on the slate. Juan Martin del Potro and Venus Williams headlined the group in action in the quarterfinals.

Let's check out the full schedule and list of scores from Wednesday, which will be updated through the conclusion of play. That's followed by a recap of the action.

Tournament Brackets

Ostapenko Edges Svitolina

Ostapenko survived an immense clash of styles by coming up with some clutch shots during each of the two tiebreaks to reach the semifinals.

The 2017 French Open champion was on the attack for almost the entire match with Svitolina content to play a counter-punching style. WTA Insider highlighted an exchange with coach David Taylor about the importance of continuing to apply pressure:

While the high-risk, high-reward style led to some tense moments throughout the match, most notably when Ostapenko dropped serve to fall behind 6-5 in the second set, it paid off in the end. She broke right back and closed out her Ukrainian counterpart in straight sets.

Jose Morgado of Sport TV Portugal commented on the Latvian's uptick in form:

Ostapenko reached her first singles semifinal of the year with the narrow win.

Isner Cruises by Chung

Isner faced a single break point and broke the serve of Chung, one of the most promising young players on the ATP Tour, three times to pick up a drama-free victory.

It's been a sluggish start to the 2018 season for the 32-year-old American, who entered the Miami Masters with a 2-6 record in singles matches. He's played far better in this event with wins over Jiri Vesely, Mikhail Youzhny and No. 2 seed Marin Cilic before taking down the 21-year-old South Korean.

Tennis TV highlighted his celebration and noted his recent success in Masters 1000 tournaments:

Tennis.com discussed his strong performance in Miami:

A tournament title would be Isner's first since the Atlanta Open last July.

Collins' Remarkable Run Continues

Collins showed no sign of nerves as she scored the most notable victory of her young career by taking out one of the legends of American tennis.

Williams was no match for the sudden, meteoric rise of the 24-year-old University of Virginia product. She reached the fourth round at Indian Wells and now she's two victories away from making her first WTA Tour title one of the biggest non-major championships on the schedule.

Tennis Channel spotlighted match point of Collins' latest statement win:

The road doesn't get any easier, as she'll face off with Ostapenko in the penultimate round. Both players have reached this stage of the event with an aggressive brand of tennis. It should make for a highly entertaining battle with a spot in the final on the line.

Del Potro Earns Comeback Victory

Although Raonic was poised to earn a spot in the semifinals, del Potro fought back after losing the first set to win his 15th match in a row.

Tennis TV captured the dramatic final point:

Both players were incredible with their serves, each winning 67 percent or more of their service points.

This meant the match effectively came down to a few key points. Raonic didn't face a single break in the first set, although he was able to break del Potro in his only opportunity to earn a 7-5 win.

The next two sets came down to a tiebreak, with neither player broken in the second set. Delpo was in complete control of the tiebreaker, however, dropping just a single point to earn the win.

Although there were finally a few breaks in the third set, del Potro stepped up again with a 7-3 win in the tiebreak.

Raonic hadn't dropped a single set in the tournament, but two straight losses cost him the match.
