Miami Open Masters 2018: Early Scores and Results from Wednesday
Jelena Ostapenko is into the semi-finals of the 2018 Miami Open for the first time in her career after knocking out fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina in straight sets on Wednesday.
A topsy-turvy contest was decided by two tiebreaks, with Ostapenko just having the edge on her rival. The Miami Open showed the final score:
In the men's draw, John Isner continued the form he showed in ousting No. 2 seed Marin Cilic with a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 win over South Korea's Hyeon Chung.
The full results and schedule are available from the competition's official website.
Ostapenko took an early break in the first set at 2-1 after forcing her opponent wide. She then consolidated her lead by holding serve with a brilliant cross-court shot, per the WTA:
Ostapenko moved 5-3 ahead and looked on course to take the first set before Svitolina hit back by winning three straight games to lead 6-5.
Back came Ostapenko—who held her nerve, and her serve—to force the tiebreak, which she won 7-6 (3).
Journalist Jose Morgado showed how Ostapenko hit far more winners in the first set than her opponent:
Svitolina looked to respond and took an early lead in the second set, but Ostapenko continued to go for her shots and landed some big winners as she levelled the match at 3-3.
The two players continued to swap breaks of serve in a compelling second set that eventually culminated in another tiebreak. Again Ostapenko was the dominant force and finally clinched victory with her fourth match point.
Ostapenko will play either Venus Williams or Danielle Collins in the semi-final on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Isner raced through the first set against Chung in just 25 minutes, per the Miami Open:
Chung rallied at the start of the second set. He held his first two service games before being broken yet again as Isner moved 3-2 up.
The break proved crucial. Chung simply had no answer to the big-serving American, who powered through to take the second set 6-4. Isner will now face Juan Martin del Potro or Milos Raonic in the last four.
