Recap
Sam Querrey represented another disappointing early exit for the Americans in this event on home soil as the No. 11 seed lost to unseeded Denis Shapovalov.
Shapovalov had 12 double faults in the three sets, but he survived by attacking Querrey's second serve to earn four breaks in the match.
Like Querrey, fellow American Steve Johnson was also eliminated in the third round, as No. 16 seed Pablo Carreno Busta needed only two sets to advance to the next round. Carreno Busta won 73 percent of his service points and will move onto face Fernando Verdasco.
In what was supposed to be one of the closest matches of the day, No. 17 seed Nick Kyrgios didn't have as much trouble as expected against No. 15 seed Fabio Fognini, winning 6-3, 6-3.
Jose Morgado of Record Portugal discussed the strong play of Kyrgios:
The Australian finished with five aces and needed just over an hour to defeat the Italian.
Kyrgios will now take on No. 4 Alexander Zverev, who survived a tough test with David Ferrer Monday night.
Ferrer easily won the first set 6-2, but couldn't match his serving success in the next two sets. He ended up with one ace and seven double faults in a disappointing three-set loss to the No. 4 seed despite earning four breaks in the match.
No. 6 Kevin Anderson had a similar path to his win, falling in the first set before bouncing back with a three-set win to earn a spot in the Round of 16.

Recap
Several top seeds went down in upsets based on the seeds, but they didn't seem like upsets during the match.
Victoria Azarenka has had a slow start to 2018, but she looked as good as ever with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Agnieszka Radwanska. The former No. 1 player in the world was dominant with her serve and seemingly just as good returning, continually hitting it where her opponent wasn't:
She will hope to keep it going in the next round against No. 5 Karolina Pliskova.
Sloane Stephens also had an easier time than expected with No. 3 Garbine Muguruza. The No. 13 seed won 60 percent of her first serves and then an impressive 62 percent of second serves, and this consistency made a huge difference in this matchup.
With her ability to save break points, it ended up being a relatively easy win for the American.
Other top players were able to respond after slow starts, like Venus Williams. Johanna Konta got off to a great start with a 7-5 win in the first set. However, the No. 11 seed bounced back with a 6-1, 6-2 finish over the next two sets to knock out the defending champion at this event:
Williams has now dropped the first set in back-to-back matches before bouncing back for a win.
No. 10 seed Angelique Kerber had a similar story against qualifier Yafan Wang, who had already knocked out Carla Suarez Navarro and Alison Riske this tournament. Wang won the first set on a tiebreaker, but she lost the second set the same way.
Kerber finally got going in the third set and will now face Stephens in the quarterfinals.
