Recap
While the bulk of Saturday's early action took place in the men's draw, the biggest upset came in the women's tournament, where Halep lost in three sets to Radwanska.
Halep had not been in great form of late and struggled tremendously in her previous win over Oceane Dodin, a young and relatively unknown player who hasn't won a tournament on the WTA Tour since 2016.
The more experienced Radwanska took full advantage of those struggles, improving her level of play after a one-sided first set. Halep made far too many unforced errors, as shared by WTA Insider:
It was Radwanska's first win over an opponent ranked inside the top five since 2016 and Halep's first loss before the semi-finals in any tournament this year.
On the men's side, Zverev also struggled, but the younger German managed to power through to the next round. Here's a look at how things ended between him and fellow youngster Medvedev, via TennisTV:
The 22-year-old Russian has been steadily rising up the rankings and took his first ATP title earlier this year in Sydney. He held his own against the 20-year-old Zverev, who appeared to lose the plot completely in the second set.
He showed tremendous fortitude to bounce back in the decider, however, showing why he's so far above most of the other Next Generation hopefuls in the world rankings.
Shapovalov, another Next Generation star, had it much easier against Dzumhur. Per tennis writer Ricky Dimon, he could well be on his way to the semi-finals at this rate:
The 18-year-old flashed his lack of experience in the previous round, a win over Viktor Troicki where he nearly suffered a collapse in the end, but he was almost flawless on Saturday. If he can maintain that consistency, there's no reason he can't go on a deep run in the tournament.
