Recap
The underdogs gave it their all Friday, but the majority came up just short.
While her sister Serena was knocked out in the opening round, Venus Williams advanced to the third round with a victory over Natalia Vikhlyantseva. Don't let the fact that it was a straight-set win fool you, though. Vikhlyantseva gave Williams all she could handle:
But in the end, experience won:
"She hit every unexpected shot and what can you do except clap on those shots?" Williams said, per WTATennis.com. "Thankfully, I was able to find a way to win this match."
Like Williams, Jelena Ostapenko was also tested in a straight-set victory:
However, not every top seed managed to hold off an opponent.
Danielle Collins continued her strong play as of late by knocking out No. 16 CoCo Vandeweghe in three sets:
The 24-year-old American also defeated Madison Keys at Indian Wells earlier this month. Collins would go on to make the round of 16 in that tournament. As USTA noted, she is on the rise in the rankings, and this latest victory will only continue that trend.
Plenty of stars remain as the tournament heads into the weekend. While many found a way to win Friday, the second round put them on notice that victories won't come easy.

Recap
Novak Djokovic may be back on the court, but he is hardly himself right now.
On Friday, the six-time Miami Open champion saw his 16-match win streak at the tournament come to a sudden end. Benoit Paire made quick work of his highly ranked opponent, winning in straight sets:
It marks Djokovic's third consecutive loss as he continues to try recover from elbow surgery. He reached the round of 16 back at the Australian Open in January but has been knocked out in his first match of each of his past two tournaments.
“I mean, I'm trying, but it's not working. That's all. That's all it is,” Djokovic said, per ATPWorldTour.com. “I'm not feeling great when I'm playing this way. Of course, I want to be able to play as well as I want to play. Just it's impossible at the moment. That's all. I lost to a better player.”
Of course, the 12-time Grand Slam champ has confidence in himself to push through these tough times.
“I'm just in general trying everything I can. It is what it is. I'm not at the level that I used to be,” Djokovic added “I'm aware of that. I just have to obviously believe in myself and hopefully it will come.”
Djokovic's struggles continue to be the biggest storyline, but other top players were also in action.
John Isner shook off a three-match losing streak to hold off Jiri Vesely. Like many other top players on this day, he had to battle his way to victory:
One result that stood out above the rest in the second round was how easily Joao Sousa handled No. 7 David Goffin 6-0, 6-1. It took just 61 minutes for Sousa to eliminate Goffin, who was returning from an eye injury suffered last month.
“I think I played a great match today," Sousa said, per ATPWorldTour.com. "I was able to play my best tennis from the beginning. For sure, David was not able to play his best tennis today. I know how tough it is coming from an injury that he had a few weeks ago. I'm really happy that I was able to play great tennis. It's not easy to play against these kinds of players. They are very good. So yeah I'm very happy I can enjoy this victory a lot today.”
If Friday was a sign of things to come, the rest of the weekend should give fans a show.
