Equanimeous St. Brown: Teams Asked If I Love Football Because I Speak Languages
As teams do their homework on Equanimeous St. Brown ahead of the 2018 NFL draft, the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish receiver has encountered an unusual query.
Per Irish Illustrated's Pete Sampson, St. Brown said NFL franchises have questioned his love of the game for a non-football reason: "The most common question I get is do I love football because I went to Notre Dame and I speak languages. That's the common question I get."
When St. Brown committed to Notre Dame in 2015, he did so in three different languages: English, German and French. He can also speak Spanish (h/t Sporting News).
Perhaps teams wonder if he is 100 percent committed to football if he has spent time learning different languages, but it seems odd to view going to a respected school and being multilingual as a red flag. In a scouting report, though, NFL.com's Lance Zierlein mentioned the wideout's lack of competitiveness as a concern.
St. Brown hauled in 91 catches for 1,476 yards and 13 touchdowns over the past two seasons in South Bend. At 6'5" and 214 pounds, he gives quarterbacks a big target to throw to. And with a 4.48 40-yard dash, he has good speed for a player his size.
St. Brown is not in the top tier of receivers in this draft class, but he projects to be a middle-round pick.
