College Football Week 8 (1st BCS Standings)
Wellllllllll. They are here. The first BCS standings came out this past Sunday and there are a lot of familiar teams. No real big surprises, but there is still a lot of football left to be played. Here is a look at the Top 10 in the BCS:
1. Florida- deserved. won it last year, haven’t been beaten yet.
2. Alabama- some say THEY should be #1. Tough team.
3. Texas- keep winning, and they will be there. Tough road ahead though.
4. Boise State- How cute. They will get jumped even if they go undefeated.
5. Cincinnati- Surprise team. Will eventually lose 1 in the Big East.
6. Iowa- Underrated team. No respect from a weak conference.
7. USC- That loss to Washington REALLY isn’t helping right now.
8. TCU- Chance to play in a BCS bowl, probably won’t happen.
9. LSU- Only loss was a close one to Florida. Those hurt.
10.Miami- Everyone’s darling early, still has a chance to make some noise.
Here is a look at this weeks key games:
Georgia Tech @ Virginia: Remember that time Virginia lost to William & Mary? Shameful. They followed that up with 2 more losses to TCU and Southern Mississippi. Since then, the Cavaliers have won 3 straight and sit atop the ACC Coastal Division. Strange huh? Admittedly, Virginia still has Miami, Boston College, Clemson and Virginia Tech on their schedule, but at least they have turned things around for the time being. Georgia Tech is coming off an impressive win over Top 5 ranked Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. If the Yellow Jackets offense can show the same consistency they showed against a good Va Tech defense in Charlottesville, look for them to take home a victory. Something of note, the Jackets have not won at Virginia since 1990. Yikes.
My Pick: Georgia Tech 28 Virginia 20
Oklahoma @ Kansas: Both teams are coming off heart breaking losses to inner-conference rivals. OU was beaten 16-13 by Texas, while Kansas lost a shootout to Colorado 34-30. Kansas is still looking for respect and trying to prove that their success in recent years is no fluke. Oklahoma is looking to right its ship after starting the season 3-3 after losing former Heisman winner Sam Bradford. Look for the Jayhawks and Sooners to come down to the wire.
My Pick: Oklahoma 38 Kansas 34
Tennessee @ Alabama: Interesting game. Not many people realize this around the country, but this game is a bitter rivalry. There is not much love, well, really none at all between these two teams. Alabama is considered by many to be the best team in the country. Their defense is tough to score on, and their offense has been consistent, led by Heisman trophy contender Mark Ingram. The Volunteers are a Jekyll and Hyde team. They are coming off a 45-19 beatdown of Georgia, but have struggled to score points against better opponents. If they offense can make plays, look for them to keep it close with the Crimson Tide.
My Pick: Alabama 24 Tennessee 16
TCU @ BYU: This could be the game of the week. Everyone seemed to fall in love with BYU when they magically beat the Sooners to open the season, but quickly jumped off the bandwagon after their loss to Florida State. The Cougar offense is led by Max Hall, and has been impressive it every game this season. Surprisingly, TCU could be the best defense they face all season. They are lead by defensive end Jerry Hughes who averages over 1 sack per game. Look for this to be the best game of the day.
My Pick: BYU 30 TCU 29
Texas @ Missouri: The Longhorns are still an enigma to most of the country. Are they a legit top 3 team or have they gotten “lucky” in recent games? Missouri will be a great test for the Longhorns and begin a tough road in the next few weeks. Missouri likes to get vertical in their passing game, which will test a really good Longhorn secondary. If Texas can start the game without its usual early hiccups, look for them to take home a victory.
My Pick: Texas 37 Missouri 21
Upset Pick of the Week: Washington 35 Oregon 31- They have already done it once this year, why not again?
Game No One Knows is Being Played: Central Arkansas 38 Nicholls State 28- James Lovett and company win one for the home crowd on Homecoming.
