Indian Wells Tennis 2018: Early Scores and Results from Sunday

Novak Djokovic's first match since the 2018 Australian Open did not go as planned, as the Serb lost to qualifier Taro Daniel in three sets during Sunday's early action at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.

Daniel came back from a break down to take the first set in a tiebreak, and he limited mistakes in the third to secure the upset.

Elsewhere, 16-year-old Amanda Anisimova shocked Petra Kvitova, ending her 14-match win streak.

Djokovic hadn't played competitively since his shock loss agains Hyeon Chung in Melbourne and subsequent elbow surgery, and he showed clear signs of rust on Sunday.

The Serb had a set point while up 5-2 in the first but couldn't convert, and he would end up losing a tiebreak to Daniel. Tennis Channel couldn't believe it:

Djoker would grab a key break in the seventh game of the second set, and that single break would be enough, as the two went to a decider. He faded quickly in the third set, however, and Daniel handled the pressure well, securing a huge win.

Dudi Sela needed just two sets to knock Kyle Edmund out of the tournament, a remarkable achievement. The Israeli only qualified for the contest as a lucky loser, while Edmund―appearing in his first match since the Australian Open―was widely backed as a dark horse to go deep into the tournament.

Philipp Kohlschreiber dropped a set to qualifier Tim Smyczek before finding his form and grabbing a win, and Gilles Muller lost in two sets to France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Gael Monfils and John Isner fought out one of the best battles of the day, splitting the first two sets in two tiebreaks.

The third set turned into a real thriller, with Monfils earning the decisive break. The Frenchman saved a match point himself.

One of the biggest shocks of the early results came in the women's draw, where in-form Kvitova saw her excellent run halted by 16-year-old wild card Anisimova. Here's a look at the final point:

Kvitova entered the match on a 14-match win streak, moving back into the top 10. She had also won the Qatar Total Open.
