The Miz's Most Memorable Matches, Moments in WrestleMania History

Mike ChiariMar 29, 2018

As one of WWE's veteran performers, The Miz has had many opportunities to perform on the WrestleMania stage over the years.

He made his main-roster debut in 2006 after taking part in Tough Enough, and there is little doubt he is better than ever as arguably the best heel in the promotion and the wrestling business as a whole.

Although he is 37, The Miz's best days may still be ahead of him. Even so, he has already left an important mark on The Showcase of the Immortals.

With The Miz set to take part in another big match at WrestleMania 34, putting his Intercontinental Championship on the line against Finn Balor and Seth Rollins, here is a closer look at some of his best WrestleMania matches and moments.

Miz's Pre-Match Promo and Entrance from WrestleMania XXVII

The first several years of The Miz's WWE career saw him compete in tag team matches or pre-show Battle Royals at WrestleMania.

It wasn't until WrestleMania XXVII in 2011 that he was given a big spot on the card.

In fact, the Awesome One was put in a position every Superstar aspires to ascend to, as he entered WrestleMania as the WWE champion.

The Miz closed the show against John Cena, but what happened before the match was undoubtedly among Miz's greatest WrestleMania moments.

Ahead of his entrance, WWE played a video package that was essentially a retrospective of The Miz's career, and it was accompanied by Hate Me Now by Nas.

The video showed The Miz's beginnings as a member of the cast of MTV's The Real World before he rose up through the ranks on Tough Enough and then became a member of the WWE roster.

It also featured Miz's successful Money in the Bank contract cash in on Randy Orton to become WWE champion for the first time in the months leading up to WrestleMania.

After that, The Miz made his entrance alongside protege Alex Riley in grand fashion.

The word "awesome" formed behind him in inflatable letters, and he walked to the ring with the swagger of a Superstar who had been in that position many times before.

At the same time, it was clear The Miz was taking it all in and living out a childhood dream few believed he would achieve.

Although The Miz was the dastardly heel in that equation against Cena, it was difficult for any lifelong wrestling fan to feel anything other than joy for another longtime fan reaching the pinnacle of the sport.

Miz Retains WWE Title vs. John Cena at WrestleMania XXVII Thanks to The Rock

After his memorable entrance, The Miz prepared for the biggest challenge of his career in defending the WWE Championship against John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania XXVII.

It can be argued Miz was a forgotten man during the build toward the event, as much of the focus was on the returning Rock's beef with John Cena.

That carried over to WrestleMania, with The Rock serving as guest host and having a strong presence on the show.

Cena versus The Miz began in routine fashion, however, and they had a solid match until both Superstars were counted out after fighting on the floor.

That prompted The Rock to come out and say he wouldn't allow WrestleMania to end in that fashion, resulting in the match's restart with no disqualifications and no count-outs.

The Rock used that to his advantage by laying Cena out with a Rock Bottom, which allowed The Miz to pin him and retain the WWE Championship.

Miz later appeared on SiriusXM with Sam Roberts and said he didn't remember his WrestleMania XXVII match because of a concussion he suffered while taking a bump to set up the double count-out.

The Miz showed incredible toughness by finishing the contest, and he went down in WWE history with the win.

In addition to being on the exclusive list of Superstars who have beaten Cena at The Showcase of the Immortals, he is one of just four heels to close WrestleMania with a win along with Triple H, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Seth Rollins.

Although the match was largely a setup for Cena and The Rock's meeting at WrestleMania XXVIII, The Miz benefited from that angle, and it gave him a WrestleMania moment that can never be taken away.

Miz and Damien Mizdow Explode in WrestleMania 31 Andre the Giant Battle Royal

The Miz wasn't featured on the main card at WrestleMania 31, but he still made an impact by providing the most entertaining moment of the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

One year after Cesaro won the inaugural Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal in spectacular fashion, the second edition of the match came down to The Miz, Damien Mizdow and WrestleMania XXX runner-up Big Show.

In the weeks and months leading up to the event, Mizdow had transformed from Damien Sandow into The Miz's stunt double.

Mizdow was largely comic relief, but he got over hugely by mimicking everything The Miz did in an entertaining way.

The Miz had been mistreating him, though, and it was clearly leading to an eventual split, with Mizdow getting fed up with the lack of respect he was given.

That came to fruition at WrestleMania 31, when Mizdow refused to help The Miz take out Big Show. Instead Mizdow threw his partner over the top rope and attempted to take on The World's Largest Athlete by himself.

It appeared as though Mizdow was set to eliminate Big Show and pick up the win, but Show managed to hold him off and win the contest.

The exchange between The Miz and Mizdow may have meant more had Mizdow gone on to win the match, but it was still a great way resolve an angle that had been progressing for months.

It wasn't exactly a moment of glory for The Miz, but as one of the best heels in the business, it was a satisfying spot since he got the comeuppance he had deserved for so long.

Miz and Maryse Get Cheered vs. John Cena and Nikki Bella at WrestleMania 33

4 of 4

It was initially unclear whether there would be a prime spot on the WrestleMania 33 card for The Miz despite his incredible work in 2016 and early 2017, but that changed when he and his wife, Maryse, were booked into a mixed tag team match against John Cena and Nikki Bella.

Miz already had history with Cena on the WrestleMania stage, while Maryse and Nikki were former best friends who had a falling out, which was discussed on the reality show Total Divas.

There was a natural rivalry between the couples, and it heated up even more leading up to WrestleMania.

The Miz and Maryse expertly impersonated Cena and Bella, and they made fun of the fact Cena said he never wanted to get married again.

Since the It Couple did such a fine job creating intrigue in the match, they were rewarded with an overwhelmingly positive crowd reaction at WrestleMania.

Despite being a heel, the fans cheered The Miz over Cena, and they were delighted to see the A-Lister dominate Cena for the majority of the match.

Cena and Nikki won after a hot tag and dual finishers, but The Miz got his moment in the sun by coming across as more popular than one of the biggest Superstars in the history of the business.

After the match, Cena proved The Miz and Maryse wrong by proposing to Nikki, which made for a feelgood moment.

If not for the fact The Miz and Maryse were the perfect foils to Cena and Bella, however, the moment wouldn't have meant as much, and that speaks to how well they played their roles.
