Trish Stratus' Most Memorable Matches, Moments in WrestleMania History

Joseph ZuckerMar 23, 2018

With the increased legitimacy surrounding WWE's women's division, it's easy to forget the contributions of stars such as Trish Stratus, who were unable to reap the benefits of the Divas Revolution but remain legends in their own right.

Stratus is a seven-time women's champion, a WWE Hall of Famer and was arguably the most recognizable women's wrestler in WWE during the early-to-mid 2000s. She, along with many others, helped lay the groundwork for the current generation to thrive.

Despite her stature in the business, Stratus' WrestleMania record is a bit of a mixed bag. While she had multiple title matches at The Showcase of the Immortals, she was also involved in a few storylines that look regrettable in retrospect.

For better and worse, here are Stratus' most memorable moments at WrestleMania over the years.

WrestleMania X-Seven: Trish Slaps Vince, Attacks Stephanie

For those who didn't follow WWE in 2001 or don't recollect much of the buildup to WrestleMania X-Seven, that's probably for the best in the case of the storyline surrounding Vince McMahon's match with his son, Shane.

When Linda McMahon was running in the 2012 Republican primary for the United States Senate, her opponent, Chris Shays, directly referenced this story, specifically the part when Vince made Stratus get down on all fours and bark like a dog.

The story ended with Stratus wheeling a supposedly comatose Linda to ringside. The WWE chief executive then stood up from her wheelchair and kicked husband Vince in the groin. Stratus herself slapped McMahon and fought with Stephanie McMahon in a brawl that took them outside the arena.

This is one of those stories that was uncomfortable at the time and hasn't gotten any better with age. Luckily for Stratus, it was only up from here at WrestleMania.

WrestleMania XIX: Trish Becomes a 4-Time Women's Champion

Stratus unsuccessfully challenged for the WWF Women's Championship at WrestleMania X8, losing to Jazz in a triple threat match that included Lita.

A year later, Stratus had a chance for redemption when she met Jazz and Victoria for the women's title.

By the time WrestleMania XIX rolled around, Stratus was one of—if not the—biggest star in the women's division. She had held the Women's Championship on three occasions.

Victoria beat Stratus for the belt at Survivor Series 2002, which helped set up the Triple Threat match at WrestleMania XIX. The two were also involved in a Triple Threat match at Armageddon 2002 in which Victoria successfully defended the title.

Stratus' win over Victoria is a great illustration of how much progress she made since the nadir of WrestleMania X-Seven.

WrestleMania XX: Trish Turns on Y2J

Fast forward to WrestleMania XX, and Stratus was again relegated to a supporting role.

Stratus was in an on-screen romance with Chris Jericho for months leading up to WrestleMania in 2004, and he was wrestling Christian largely to defend her honor.

However, Stratus stabbed Y2J in the back following his loss to Christian. She slapped Jericho, which allowed Christian to put an exclamation point on his win by hitting Jericho with the Unprettier.

To cap it all off, Stratus and Christian shared a passionate kiss on the entrance ramp while Jericho looked on.

WrestleMania 22: Changing of the Guard

4 of 5

When she wrestled Mickie James at WrestleMania 22, Stratus was winding down her in-ring career. She would go on to beat Lita in her retirement match at Unforgiven 2006.

Symbolically, Stratus losing to James represented a passing of the torch. Her opponent captured the WWE Women's Championship for the first time and would go on to win the belt four more times, as well as enjoy a reign as the Divas champion.

Beating Stratus at the biggest pay-per-view of the year was James' star-making moment. The win cemented her as one of WWE's top female wrestlers, and she enjoyed that status until leaving the company in 2010. James has since become one of the elder stateswomen after returning to WWE's main roster in 2017.

Seeing James and Stratus cross paths at the 2018 Royal Rumble brought back a flood of memories.

WrestleMania XXVII: Trish Returns for 6-Person Tag Match

5 of 5

Stratus really needs to appear in another WrestleMania, if only to guarantee her last Mania match doesn't include Snooki from Jersey Shore.

WrestleMania XXVII was the first of back-to-back Manias to feature a celebrity guest appearance in a tag team match. Kelly Kelly teamed with Maria Menounos to beat Beth Phoenix and Eve Torres at WrestleMania XXVIII a year later.

Between Stratus, John Morrison, Dolph Ziggler and LayCool, there was a lot of talent in the ring who could have made for an interesting mixed tag match. Instead, this was largely about helping WWE get headlines from mainstream entertainment outlets by including a member of the Jersey Shore cast, and everybody else was along for the ride.
