College Football Upset Picks for Week 8

Can Notre Dame rebound from last week’s tough defeat to USC? The Irish could be in some trouble against a team that has given them plenty of difficulty in recent years.

The Jayhawks were caught looking ahead to this matchup last week in an upset defeat at Colorado. While Kansas fell for the first time this year in the setback, the Jayhawks will be eager to gain a rare win over the wounded Sooners. However, the Sooners have already suffered three defeats in 2009 after being a national title contender before the start of the year. The club will have trouble getting up for this game after losing against their biggest rival last week.

Oklahoma is clearly not the same team when Heisman winner Sam Bradford is not on the field. The Jayhawks are in the top 5 in the nation in total, scoring and passing offense. Without Bradford, the Sooners will have a much less potent offense to go to war with in a potential shootout. The crowd will also be a significant factor in Lawrence to support the underdog Jayhawks against the 7-point favorites from Norman.

The Wolverines hammered Delaware State in Ann Arbor last week after dropping a couple of close calls on the road. Michigan will look to remain perfect at home in 2009 against the 13th-ranked Nittany Lions.

The Wolverines have shown some clear improvement this season under head coach Rich Rodriguez. Michigan is in the top ten in the nation in scoring and rushing offense. Penn State has feasted on a weak schedule to post a 6-1 record. In their only prior game against a quality team, the Nittany Lions lost at home to Iowa. Now, the squad will face their first difficult road game of the year as a 4-point favorite. Penn State has dropped their last five contests in Ann Arbor and snapped an overall nine-game losing skid to the Wolverines last year at home.

The Irish put everything they had into last week’s matchup against USC. After dropping their eighth straight contest to the Trojans, Notre Dame has to turn right back around and face a solid Boston College squad on Saturday. Since 2001, the Irish have dropped six straight games to the Eagles.

Boston College running back Montel Harris will give Notre Dame’s defense plenty to think about this week. The sophomore runner gained 264 yards with five TD runs in last week’s rout of NC State. The Eagles should be able to attack a mediocre Notre Dame defense that is 104th in the country in total defense. In contrast, Boston College is 41st in the nation in total defense. With plenty of confidence due to their winning run against the Irish, the 9.5-point underdogs from Boston could cause considerable headaches for the Irish faithful in South Bend on Saturday.
