Reigning champion Roger Federer cruised into the final of the 2018 Australian Open after South Korea's Hyeon Chung retired injured when trailing 6-1, 5-2 on Rod Laver Arena.

It was a sad ending to the tournament for Chung, who had enjoyed a superb showing in Melbourne, while Federer will now go on to play sixth seed Marin Cilic in Sunday's final.

The full results, draw and schedule are available on the Australian Open's official website.

Friday Recap

Chung headed into Friday's match in good spirits having charmed the tournament and picked up some outstanding results. The South Korean saw off both Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic before beating Tennys Sandgren in the quarter-finals.

The Australian Open's official Twitter account highlighted the big age gap between the two men:

However, it was a nervy start from the 21-year-old, who dropped his opening service game after Federer won the toss and opted to receive. Federer then rammed his advantage home to move into a 4-1 lead.

The 36-year-old then broke serve twice more to win the first set 6-1. Tennis journalist Jose Morgan showed how it was his easiest set of the tournament so far:

ESPN's Matt Wilansky highlighted how Federer needed just 33 minutes to wrap up the first set:

The second set continued in a similar vein, with Federer holding his opening service game to love. Chung managed to hold to make it 1-1 but was making no impression on his opponent's serve, as he raced through his service games with ease.

Federer then broke for 3-1 and was working that extra bit harder than Chung, as shown by the Australian Open:

The champion was in red-hot form, and after moving into a 4-1 lead, Chung opted for a medical timeout. The youngster received treatment on his foot for blisters but managed to hold serve on his return.

However, Chung looked limited in his movement and, after Federer went 5-2 ahead, abruptly retired from the match, sending the champion into his seventh Australian Open final.

Tennis writer Christopher Clancy showed how Federer ranks among the oldest men to reach the final:

Federer is still yet to drop a set in the tournament and now faces Cilic in what will be a repeat of the 2017 Wimbledon final, which the Swiss star won in straight sets.
