Cilic Ends Edmund's Run

Edmund, along with fellow semi-finalist Hyeon Chung, has been one of the breakout stars of the Australian Open this year having never made it past the fourth round of a Grand Slam, but he failed to overcome the more experienced Cilic here.

The Briton earned two break points in the opening game but crucially failed to take them, and he would not have another opportunity for the remainder of the first set. By contrast, Cilic converted two of three break points in the opener to draw first blood.

Both players held firm on their serve in the second, resulting in an inevitable tiebreaker. Cilic had the edge in the clutch moment, though, per Eurosport UK:

It was the Croatian who proved the stronger in the third and final set too, with a fatigued Edmund lacking the ability to resist, and two more breaks handed Cilic the match.

Tennis journalist Tumaini Carayol praised the 29-year-old for reaching the final:

Meanwhile, Halep took her opening set after 25 minutes, having raced to a 5-0 lead before Kerber rattled off three games in succession in an attempt to battle back.

Kerber successfully came back from a break down in the second set to force a decider of the highest quality.

Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times hailed the players' showing as the momentum shifted back and forth:

Eurosport UK shared an example of thrilling rallies they produced:

Kerber saved two match points in that game, and soon Halep was forced to do the same when the German edged ahead.

The Romanian held on, though, and would earn two more match points of her own at 8-7, successfully taking the second.

Former tennis star and Eurosport pundit Annabel Croft reflected on the contest:

As for Wozniacki, she eased through the first set and had the chance to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second.

Mertens had been second best throughout, but she was resurgent after a double-fault from the Dane helped her break back, and the pair went to a tiebreaker after Wozniacki saved two set points.

After dispatching the Belgian handily in the tiebreak to win the match, the No. 2 seed reflected on her run to the semi-final in 2011, in which she failed to convert a match point against Li Na and was subsequently knocked out.

"That was definitely on my mind out there today," she said, per the Guardian's Mike Hytner. "I tried to stay calm and I was lucky to get a win. Normally, I am really calm. Once I start to feel nervous, my legs start shaking."

Wozniacki will now get a shot at her first Grand Slam title, in what will be her third final. Halep will be in the same position, and the pair have all the tools to produce a memorable showpiece on Saturday.
