Roger Federer advanced to the semi-finals of the 2018 Australian Open after overcoming a slow start to beat 19th seed Tomas Berdych 7-6 (1), 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday.

His semi-final opponent in Melbourne will be Hyeon Chung, who followed up surprise wins over Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev by beating Tennys Sandgren in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

In the women's singles, Simona Halep set up a semi-final encounter against Angelique Kerber after the Romanian defeated Karolina Pliskova to beat her best finish at the Australian Open—she was a quarter-finalist in 2014 and 2015.

Recap

Federer made the Australian Open semi-finals for the 14th time in his career on Wednesday after sweeping aside Berdych in straight sets despite suffering a wobble at the beginning of their match.

The Swiss star quickly fell 0-3 down in the first set before hitting back in some style to dash Berdych's hopes. In the process, the 36-year-old veteran re-established himself as the tournament favourite, per Gracenote Olympic:

Despite the occasion of a quarter-final, Chung's meeting with unseeded Sandgren actually promised to provide something of a relief in competition quality following back-to-back meetings with Djokovic and Zverev.

The South Korean—who becomes the first of his nationality to reach this stage of a Grand Slam, per the U.S. Open—dropped sets against both those opponents but failed to do so as he romped to a 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-3 straight-sets win against Sandgren, whose own fairytale run had to end so Chung's could continue.

It's safe to say Chung's prospects have improved in Melbourne, beating some of the world's best and waltzing several stages past his previous best finish at a major—the third round at the 2017 French Open—although his demeanour wouldn't show it:

Sandgren prevented only two of the eight break points he faced and exited despite hitting eight more winners than Chung, per the official Australian Open website, showing just how close the pair were in their duel.

As for the women's singles, tennis writer Jose Morgado set the stage as Halep and Kerber defeated Pliskova and Keys, respectively, to tee up what looks to be a promising semi-final fixture:

Pliskova fell to Halep 6-3, 6-2 and struggled to contain the Romanian's output in a match that ended after a little more than an hour.

Kerber was even more dominant in a 6-1, 6-2 rout of Keys, leading Eleanor Crooks of the Press Association to outline just what a force the German looks in her current vein of form:

Last year was a learning curve for Kerber, who struggled to maintain pace following the first two major victories of her career in 2016, but she already looks ready to return to that Grand Slam pace in 2018.

Halep is still yet to add a major trophy to her cabinet, and with the winner of this clash set to face either Caroline Wozniacki or Elise Mertens in the final, this could present her as good a chance as any to end that rut.
