Edmund, Mertens Reach Australian Open Semi-Finals

Edmund got his match off to a perfect start as he opened with a break against Dimitrov. After letting slip a 3-1 lead, the British player moved back in front thanks to a venomous forehand winner, and he saved three break points on the way to serving out the set.

BBC Sport's David Law noted the way Dimitrov struggles against Edmund's style:

The Bulgarian responded well to the setback, though, and powered level by taking the second set, but a double-fault at break point in the third saw him behind once again.

The pair shared a nervy exchange of breaks in the fourth, before Edmund was able to regain his composure and see out the contest.

Stuart Fraser of The Times noted the significance of the win for the 23-year-old:

Per BBC Sport's Piers Newbery, Edmund said:

"It's an amazing feeling.

"With these sort of things, you're emotionally engaged and you don't take it in. At the end of a hard match, I just tried to enjoy the moment.

"It's my first match on this court and it was very special."

Mertens' clash with Svitolina began in a tight fashion, with the Belgian put under some pressure in her first service game, but she soon had a break thanks to a hefty slice of luck, per Eurosport UK:

That opened the match up and Mertens was able to break again for a 5-2 lead. Svitolina hit back to prevent her unseeded opponent from serving out the set at the first opportunity, but she was unable to battle back to a tiebreaker.

Mertens kicked it up a notch in the second set, and the fourth seed simply couldn't live with her aggression as she sank to a bagel.

She was elated after the match, per the Open's official Twitter account:

Mertens will play the winner of No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki's clash with Carla Suarez Navarro.
