Monday Recap
Halep came into her match having spent almost four hours on court in the previous round during her epic clash with Lauren Davis.
From the outset it was clear Halep wanted to avoid a repeat of that, per the Open's official Twitter account:
Osaka kept pace early on until an unforced error handed Halep a break and a 4-3 lead in the contest, and the Romanian quickly consolidated it before breaking again to claim the set.
The 20-year-old sparked hopes of a comeback when she broke Halep to open the second, but they were extinguished as quickly as they arrived as the top seed immediately hit back, and from there she eased to victory in an hour and 19 minutes.
Former tennis star Pam Shriver was disappointed with Osaka:
Halep, who went over on her ankle in the first round, was delighted to progress.
Per BBC Sport's Piers Newbery, she said: "It was a great match. I am really happy to be back in the quarter-finals. I didn't expect this at the start of the tournament because of the injury. The tournament has been a marathon for me. I am just trying to enjoy it and give everything."
Federer was perhaps not quite firing on all cylinders against Fucsovics, but he didn't have to be despite some strong periods from the Hungarian.
A single break separated the pair in the first set before Fucsovics held on for a tiebreaker in the second, but who would emerge triumphant was never in doubt, and the gulf in class grew wider in a comfortable third for Federer.
He praised his opponent after the match:
Kerber and Hsieh produced an entertaining contest as the former battled back from a set down, despite taking a 2-0 lead to open the match.
The German was made to work throughout, chasing down shot after shot in some gruelling rallies, but after a hard-fought win in the second set she was able to take the decider with relative ease.
Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times is eagerly anticipating her showdown with Keys in the next round:
The American knocked out eighth seed Caroline Garcia in straight sets.
She has only won one of her seven meetings with Kerber, but regardless of who takes the victory the pair look set to produce a thrilling clash in the quarter-finals.
