Roger Federer Beats Marton Fucsovics in 4th Round of 2018 Australian Open
Roger Federer booked his place in the quarter-finals of the 2018 Australian Open on Monday as he swept past Marton Fucsovics in straight sets at the Rod Laver Arena.
The No. 2 seed won 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in Melbourne to set up a clash with Tomas Berdych, and he's still yet to drop a set at the tournament this year.
An assured performance from the Swiss maestro saw him drop just 15 points on his serve across the entire match, per the Australian Open's official website.
As a result, it's perhaps unsurprising Fucsovics was unable to earn a single break point, let alone convert one as he failed to trouble Federer.
The 19-time Grand Slam winner produced the highlight of the first set on a point that was actually won by Fucsovics, per Eurosport UK:
After taking the opener with a single break, tennis analyst Carl Bialik put Federer's position in perspective:
Fucsovics was battling hard and saved three break points in the second on the way to earning a tiebreaker.
For all his effort, though, the Hungarian still lacked Federer's magic touch:
The Hungarian was outclassed in the tiebreaker as he picked up just three points, and his resistance quickly crumbled after that.
He was broken in the first game of the third set and a loose backhand saw him cede another as Federer took a 4-1 lead, and from there the Swiss served out the match.
Per Charlie Eccleshare of the Telegraph, the reigning champion was as magnanimous as ever in victory:
"He [Fucsovics] played very well. Fast conditions, you have to have quick ideas and execute well, and he did that very well. He was playing really clean, solid, bit of everything. Serving, volleying, chipping. It was good to see. Only in the third set did I start to pull away."
His opponent in the quarter-finals, Berdych, has seen off fellow seeds Juan Martin del Potro and Fabio Fognini in the last two rounds.
The Czech has not beaten Federer since 2013 and failed to take a set off him when the pair met at the Australian Open last year or in 2016, so the 19th seed have his work cut out to progress any further.
