Emre Can Future Linked to Leon Goretzka's Amid Bayern Munich, Man City Rumours

Christopher SimpsonJan 19, 2018

Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Emre Can and will have the opportunity to get him if Leon Goretzka moves to Bayern Munich.

According to David Maddock of the Mirror, Bayern are keen on both Goretzka and Can—who will be free agents in the summer and are both receptive to a move to the Allianz Arenabut are only likely to sign one.

Should they snap up the Schalke 04 man ahead of Liverpool, who are also interested in him, it will free up Can to join City as he is believed to prefer a stay in England rather than join long-term admirers Juventus.

Goretzka, 22, is widely expected to join Bayern in the summer with an announcement coming in the near future. Sport Bild's Christian Falk reported as much:

However, Bayern are yet to confirm it themselves, per football writer James Nalton:

Goretzka would be a superb capture for any side, and it will no doubt be encouraging for Liverpool that his move to Bayern is not officially over the line yet.

Nevertheless, it seems likely they'll miss out on him and lose Can at the same time, which would be a punishing blow for the Merseyside outfit as he's among their best options in the centre of the park.

The Germany international impressed during Liverpool's 4-3 win over City last weekend, per football writers Jack Sear and Ben Webb:

Can has the potential to be a superb player if he can perform like that on a more regularly.

Philippe Coutinho's consistency improved during his Anfield career, and manager Jurgen Klopp could perhaps achieve the same thing with the 24-year-old given time.

Likewise, City boss Pep Guardiola's ability to improve his players could see Can develop in a similarly positive fashion at the Etihad Stadium.

Much depends on Goretzka's future, though, so the picture could become somewhat clearer if it is resolved before the end of the January transfer window.
