Monday Recap

Nadal overwhelmed his 37-year-old opponent throughout the match with some typically powerful forehands and energetic movement, and the Dominican only just avoided the humiliation of three consecutive bagels.

A hold to love set Nadal on his way in the first game of his clash with Estrella Burgos, and the 31-year-old soon consolidated it with a break after his opponent produced a number of loose forehands in the following game.

The Spaniard continued to march toward the first set almost unchallenged, particularly on his own serve, per bet365:

Estrella Burgos pulled a game back at 5-0, but it barely delayed the inevitable as Nadal wrapped up the opener in just 23 minutes.

Nadal continued to dominate Estrella Burgos in the second, and the tournament's official Twitter account provided an example:

The veteran escaped a bagel with a hard-earned break at the sixth time of asking after the pair went back and forth at deuce, again at 5-0.

A similar pattern followed in the third and final set after the world No. 1 mustered 12 points in a row, and his passage to the next round was secured.

Williams, a losing finalist last year, was among the top women's seeds in action on Monday, but she'll have no further part in the tournament after Bencic stunned her with a 6-3, 7-5 win:

The 20-year-old is mounting her comeback after a wrist injury saw her drop to 318th in the world as recently as November, and she told BBC Radio 5 live (h/t BBC Sport's Piers Newbery):

"It means so much to me. I lost to Venus four times and I tried my best to give my all today, and changed some things tactically.

"I think it was a huge opportunity and I used it, so I was very relieved after the match point. After the injury and the tough times it's really an amazing feeling."

As for Williams, she wasn't the only American to endure a disappointed day, per the New York Times' Ben Rothenberg:

Sock was dispatched 6-4, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3 by Sugita, who will appear in the second round for the first time.

Among the local representatives was Nick Kyrgios, and he booked his place in the next round as he beat Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

The mercurial 22-year-old's often erratic behaviour on court has perhaps prevented him from reaching the heights he's capable of in Grand Slams, but he has reached a quarter-final on home turf before and he'll be hoping to do the same again here.
