Jean Segura Says Police Assaulted, Robbed Him in Dominican Republic

Scott PolacekDec 21, 2017

Seattle Mariners shortstop Jean Segura said he was assaulted and robbed by police in his native Dominican Republic in a Thursday Instagram post

The post was written in Spanish, but Zachary Ripple of the New York Daily News noted Segura said armed police officers "hit him and threw him to the ground before taking his belongings and crashing into his vehicle."

Ripple explained the "DICAN" on the officers' hats represents the Dominican Republic's anti-narcotics division.

The Dominican Republic National Police announced it appointed a commission to investigate the case:

Ripple pointed out Segura "appears" to be fine after the attack and described the practice as "part of a wider trend of corruption surrounding the department in recent years, including the former chief being sentenced to 20 years in prison for stealing millions of dollars in cocaine that was seized during drug raids."

On the field, Segura played for the Los Angeles Angels, Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks before Seattle acquired him via trade in November 2016. The Mariners announced they signed the shortstop to a five-year extension in June.

He slashed .300/.349/.427 with 11 home runs, 22 stolen bases and 45 RBI in 125 games in 2017.
