What Are the Comfort Levels for Fantasy Studs Heading into Week 15?

Richard JanvrinDec 11, 2017

It's been a few weeks since our fantasy football teams have been hit with a devastating injury, so it was obviously time for it to happen in Week 14.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz tore his ACL and is done for the year.

And with that, the Super Bowl landscape has changed dramatically—no offense, Nick Foles.

For some, this could be looked at as one less team for the New England Patriots to go through.

However, there are still enough stud players hanging around for us to analyze and we have seven of them this week.

So without further ado, let's start with the New Orleans Saints quarterback.

Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints

1 of 7

Playing at home, Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints will host the New York Jets.

The biggest storyline surrounding Brees and the Saints right now is the status of running back Alvin Kamara. In Week 14, Kamara left the game early with a concussion.

If Kamara plays, of course, this helps Brees.

But besides that, Brees has an excellent matchup.

The Jets give up the seventh-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks and, through Week 13, the Jets ranked 27th in defense-value adjusted over average against the pass.

With wide receiver Michael Thomas in the fold, Brees will always be in a great position to succeed, especially against a leaky Jets defense.

Start Brees. This could be a top-three week for him, especially with Carson Wentz on the shelf.

Jack Doyle, TE, Indianapolis Colts

2 of 7

The Indianapolis Colts have been a (expletive) show all season long.

However, tight end Jack Doyle has been a bright spot, seeing 85 targets, catching 64 of them for 564 yards and three scores.

Touchdowns have been hard to come by, but heck, Doyle managed to catch a TD, albeit on two catches for four yards in Week 14 against the Buffalo Bills in an otherworldly snowstorm (as you can see in the picture above).

Week 15 presents another excellent opportunity for Doyle.

It's on a short turnaround on Thursday Night Football, but Doyle will go up against the Denver Broncos, who, up until Week 14, were terrible against tight ends. They allowed minimal damage to New York Jets tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins in Week 14, but that was due in large part to quarterback Josh McCown leaving the game early.

Anyway, back to Doyle: He'll get plenty of targets against the Broncos and should be able to rack up a fair amount of yardage and score a touchdown in consecutive games for the first time all season against a Broncos defense that, through Week 13, ranked 26th in DVOA against opposing tight ends.

Josh Gordon, WR, Cleveland Browns

3 of 7

After not playing a sport for nearly three years, you'd think there would be some rust on that particular player.

But for Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon? Nah.

In his second game back, Gordon caught a touchdown—his first since 2014.

Now, the Browns are nothing like the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it's clear the Baltimore Ravens defense is weakened after the loss of cornerback Jimmy Smith. The Steelers put up 39 on the Ravens in Week 14, and wide receiver Antonio Brown had over 200 yards receiving.

Browns quarterback DeShone Kizer has limitations, but he looked as good as he ever has in Week 14 against the Green Bay Packers.

All Gordon needs is a few good throws from Kizer, and that should happen at Chicago.

Gordon is back and he's here to stay. He's matchup- and quarterback-proof.

A.J. Green, WR, Cincinnati Bengals

4 of 7

The Cincinnati Bengals offense has been struggling essentially all season and that was highlighted in Week 14 when the Bengals could only muster single-digit points against the Chicago Bears.

In Week 15, they get another NFC North opponent, the Minnesota Vikings—an even more stout defense.

Through Week 13, the Vikings ranked ninth in DVOA against the pass. They've shut down some of the game's best wide receivers this season, and Green should join that group.

Now, getting shut down for an elite wide receiver like Green isn't a goose egg, but maybe something like a touchdown-less performance.

Maybe the volume outweighs the risk here, but don't expect a big game for Green.

DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Houston Texans

5 of 7

Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is a tough case to crack for Week 15.

On one hand, Hopkins gets a ton of targets and is incredibly productive more times than not. Just look at Week 14—with two different mediocre quarterbacks in Tom Savage and T.J. Yates, Hopkins caught 11 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns.

On the other hand, though, he's going up against the Jacksonville Jaguars defense. He has faced them this season, catching seven of 16 targets for 55 yards and a touchdown. However, that was in Week 1 and the Jaguars defense wasn't what it is now.

Now, they are totally annihilating opposing offenses.

Kind of like A.J. Green, volume could outweigh the negatives here, but the Texans are going to have trouble containing the Jaguars pass rush. Passing the ball is going to be tough, and Jaguars cornerbacks A.J. Bouye and Jalen Ramsey are going to look to lock Hopkins down.

That's for damn sure.

Julio Jones, WR, Atlanta Falcons

6 of 7

Guys and gals, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones is facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—the same team he went off for 253 yards against just three weeks ago.

I'm not trying to rob you of legitimate analysis, but come on—there is not a lot to say here.

Sure, the Falcons are on the road against the Buccaneers this time, but there's no reason to believe that Jones won't have another fantastic game.

No, he likely won't get 200-plus yards again, but he'll still be a stud.

Get ready for another fantastic Jones outing.

Jamaal Williams, RB, Green Bay Packers

7 of 7

Over his last four games, Green Bay Packers running back Jamaal Williams has been an absolute stud.

As Alex Gelhar of NFL.com points out, Williams has five touchdowns over his last four games and had no fewer than 95 total yards in each of those four games.

However, against the Carolina Panthers, we could see him slow down a bit.

Not only that, but if quarterback Aaron Rodgers returns, we could see the passing game being utilized even more.

The Panthers, through Week 13, ranked eighth and fifth in DVOA against the pass and run, respectively.

Also, the Panthers allow the fifth-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs but are tied for eighth in rushing touchdowns allowed.

There's some upside, but it's shaky.

Still start Williams, but don't get comfortable with his recent production as an every-week occurrence.
