Mookie Betts Leaves Game vs. Orioles with Foot Injury

Tim DanielsApr 14, 2018

Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts was forced to leave Saturday's home game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park after suffering a foot injury.

Betts was diagnosed with a foot contusion and X-rays were negative, per Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun. He is considered day-to-day.

Encina reported Betts was apparently hurt after a play at the plate in the first inning. Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic noted he stayed in the game for two more innings before exiting.

Although Betts wasn't able to match his monster 2016 season, which featured a career-best .897 OPS, he still hit 24 home runs and stole 26 bases last year. He posted a terrific .360/.450/.620 triple-slash line in 13 games to open this season before the injury.

The 25-year-old two-time All-Star has remained mostly durable since becoming a full-time member of the Red Sox in 2015. He's appeared in at least 145 games each of the last three years. He did miss time during last September with a wrist injury, though.

If the latest ailment forces him back out of the lineup, Blake Swihart figures to receive any extra starts that come from Betts' absence. He'll play left field, which would shift Andrew Benintendi to center and Jackie Bradley Jr. to right, as was the case in Saturday's contest.

Ultimately, manager Alex Cora will need to juggle the batting order since none of those reserves brings the same type of production as Betts. The Red Sox are likely going to struggle generating offense until the budding superstar is cleared to return.
