Tonight in the NFL
Week 3 of NFL dress rehearsals continued on Saturday night. Unfortunately, preseason injuries continued to mount as Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor and Dallas Cowboys middle linebacker Anthony Hitchens left their respective games, among others.
Elsewhere in the league, a few wide receivers posted some noteworthy performances, while a crew of young quarterbacks struggled in their preseason tilts.
Here's a look at the most notable Week 3 news.

Tyrod Taylor Suffers Concussion Following Sack
The Buffalo Bills quarterback exited Saturday night's contest against the Baltimore Ravens with a concussion following a hard hit from linebacker Matt Judon.
On 3rd-and-7 from the Bills' 22-yard line, Taylor stepped back to attempt a pass. He evaded linebacker Terrell Suggs, but Judon came off the edge and got to Taylor, who was twisted around and landed hard as his helmet made direct contact with the turf.
Thankfully, Taylor was able to walk off the field with trainers alongside him, but the Bills announced soon after that he suffered a concussion:
Rookie quarterback Nathan Peterman, a fifth-round pick out of the University of Pittsburgh, replaced Taylor in the lineup and went 11-of-23 for 93 yards.
In two years as the Bills' starting quarterback, Taylor has thrown 37 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions while managing a 62.6-percent completion rate. The former Virginia Tech Hokie has also rushed for 1,148 yards and 10 scores.
John Brown Catches Two Touchdown Passes
The fourth-year Arizona Cardinals wideout looked fantastic on Saturday in his preseason debut against the Atlanta Falcons.
On the first play of the second quarter, Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer dropped the football in a bucket as Brown evaded Falcons' defensive backs Ricardo Allen and Jarnor Jones for a 28-yard touchdown:
He then followed that up with a remarkable 21-yard touchdown over cornerback C.J. Goodwin on a diving sideline catch:
After a breakout 2015 campaign in which he caught 65 passes for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns, Brown struggled last year, accumulating just 39 receptions for 517 yards and two scores.
However, Brown was diagnosed with the sickle-cell trait last season, which undoubtedly hindered his year. Here is more information from Adam Wells of Bleacher Report:
"Per WebMD, sickle-cell trait occurs when a person inherits a sickle-cell gene from a single parent and is different from the disease because people with the trait have normal hemoglobin (hemoglobin A) and hemoglobin S.
"WebMD also notes that people with sickle-cell trait rarely have any symptoms but in certain rare cases may experience muscle pain or other potentially serious health problems that can occur due to intense exercise or being in high altitudes."
If Brown can compete at or close to 100 percent, expect a year that resembles his 2015 efforts.
Travis Rudolph Makes a Big Impression
New York Giants wideout Travis Rudolph, an undrafted rookie out of Florida State, is a long shot to make the team's final 53-man roster, but he may have given himself a better chance with his performance against the New York Jets.
On 1st-and-10, Rudolph beat out Jets cornerback Darryl Roberts for a catch and then evaded safety Marcus Maye as he ran down the middle of the field for a 57-yard completion:
Rudolph also had a 12-yard reception, giving him a total of 69 first-half receiving yards, which was nine more than the entire Jets offense during that span. He finished with three catches for 81 yards.
The 22-year-old made the news last season when he befriended a student eating lunch by himself during a trip to a Tallahassee, Florida middle school. He's already drawing comparisons to another undrafted player who became a star (Victor Cruz).
Stay tuned to see if Rudolph lands on the Giants.
Jets QB Battle May Be Decided
Although the New York Jets have not yet named a starting quarterback for their season opener against the Buffalo Bills, it looks like 38-year-old veteran Josh McCown will get the nod after second-year signal-caller Christian Hackenberg struggled against the New York Giants.
In fairness to Hackenberg, the Giants have one of the best defenses in the league thanks to a stout line and secondary. However, Hackenberg threw two pick-sixes in the first half en route to completing just eight passes on 15 attempts for just 60 yards:
The Jets went into halftime down 29-3 following the second pick, but third-year pro Bryce Petty replaced Hackenberg and caught fire, going 15-of-18 for 250 yards and three touchdowns, including this 85-yard score to running back Bilal Powell:
Hackenberg returned to the game following a Petty knee injury (Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported that he'll be getting an MRI on Sunday) and threw a touchdown pass to bring the Jets within 32-31, but they could not convert on the two-point attempt to take the lead and lost by that score.
Petty was playing against weaker competition, as the Giants began taking out their starters, but he looked confident and poised in the pocket against the pass rush. With this performance, he may have leaped over Hackenberg as the Jets' No. 2 quarterback.
DeShone Kizer Makes His Case To Start in Cleveland
Although the stats will show that Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer completed just six of 18 passes for 93 yards and an interception against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he showcased some serious potential on a few great throws.
Perhaps none were better than this 32-yard toss that threaded the needle to wide receiver Corey Coleman:
NFLDraftScout's Dane Brugler is in favor of Kizer starting after watching him tonight:
And Tom Pelissero of NFL Network noted how good Kizer was on third down, especially in the elements:
Josh Norris of Rotoworld and NBC Sports noted that Browns head coach Hue Jackson is giving the 21-year-old a lot to handle off the bat:
Kizer has to compete with Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler for the job, but the potential shown this preseason may be too good for the Browns to pass up. Don't be surprised if he's given the keys to the offense in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, especially after Jackson's postgame comments, per Cabot:
Jared Goff Struggles Against Chargers
After a great game against the Oakland Raiders in which he went 16-of-20 for 160 yards and a touchdown, the Los Angeles Rams' second-year quarterback out of Cal had a night to forget against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Goff went just 5-of-8 for 56 yards and had one fumble and interception. The fumble came after a sack and resulted in a 76-yard touchdown return from Melvin Ingram.
Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com tweeted about the interception:
When Goff left the game, the Rams were down 21-3 early in the second quarter.
Goff is just 22 years old and learning a new system under first-year head coach Sean McVay, so he clearly has time to learn and grow.
Although tonight's start against the Los Angeles Chargers isn't encouraging by any means, the Bolts might be a dark horse this year thanks to a defense with loads of potential. Therefore, Goff may have run into a buzzsaw.
DeShaun Watson Has Up-and-Down Performance vs. New Orleans
After a strong performance against the Carolina Panthers (15-for-25 for 179 passing yards and 24 rushing yards and a score) to open his preseason, Watson has struggled in his last two games. He went just 3-for-10 for 102 yards versus the New England Patriots before going 11-for-21 along with a pick against the New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle noted that there was "good and bad" in Watson's performance tonight:
John McCain, also of the Houston Chronicle, pointed out that Watson did not get much help from his offensive line:
A three-year starter at Clemson, Watson turns just 22 years old on September 14. Watson will have time to develop slowly, as Aaron Wilson (from, you guessed it, the Houston Chronicle) reported that Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said Tom Savage is the starter:
Houston opens against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1.
Texans Forced To Fly To Dallas Following Game
Hurricane Harvey has been downgraded to a tropical storm, but the torrential rains have hit Texas (see here for a CNN report on the areas impacted), causing mass destruction and flooding.
The Houston metro area is unfortunately dealing with the ramifications of the storm, and the Texans, who just played on the road in New Orleans, cannot head home because conditions are too dangerous. They will be flying to Dallas instead for the time being:
Per CNN, the National Weather Service has posted a flash flood emergency for the counties of Brazoria, Fort Hood and Harris, where Houston is located.
Anthony Hitchens Suffers Knee Injury
Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the prognosis for Hitchens is not good after he suffered a knee injury right before halftime of Dallas' 24-20 win over the Oakland Raiders:
Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News noted that Hitchens' stock had been rising throughout his career and into this preseason:
The 25-year-old Hitchens has played in all 48 games for the Cowboys since they picked him in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft. Hitchens started all 16 games last year, amassing 78 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Losing him will be a very tough blow to the Dallas defense.
