RED ALERT: Jose Theodore injured, day to day
The Washington Capitals are happy to put their 4 game skid behind them, especially at the hands of a franchise, San Jose Sharks, they have not beaten since 1999. Alex Ovechin was happy to deliver the win, especially because San Jose remained the only team he had not netted a goal against. Last night he netted 2 goals, numbers 6 and 7, and regained his spot atop the NHL stat leaders in goals scored with 7 and sits atop the NHL in total points with 14.
Theo day to day . . . Jose Theodore left the game at the end of the first period for 'back spasms'. Semyon Varlamov took over the final two periods and pitched a shutout and earned the win, stopping all 15 shots on goal. Theo is listed as day to day.
The Caps are off until Saturday, a showdown at the Verizon Center with the Western Conference Nashville Predators. Varlamov will likely be in net. The Caps have not decided as of yet whether they will recall a goal tender from Hershey (AHL). Varly improved to 2-0 and lowered his GAA from above 5.00 to 3.58, a much needed confidence booster as well for the young Russian.
As for Varly, Washington-Capitals-Examiner%7Ey2009m10d16-Varlamov-There-was-no-margin-for-error">he realized that he would be in Net before the first period ended.
"To be honest I was told in the middle of the first period. A team doctor came up to me and told me that Theo [Jose Theodore] was feeling some pain and told me to get ready. I don't know exactly what happened to Theo, but I don't think there is anything serious. Maybe he won't practice for a day or two. But everything will be alright with him. But I am not at liberty to say what type of injury he has.
I was just told that it was possible Theo would probably want to change. I was told that I could go and warm up if I wanted to. But I just got back from the pre-game warm up and I was ready to go. After the period was over I came up to Theo and he told me that he wouldn't be able to play. That's when I started to get ready psychologically.

* How about Matt Bradley? Brads scored his 2nd goal of the season and his 4th point of the young season. Last year, Brads had a total of 11 points on 5 goals and 6 assists. Brads is way ahead of last season. Surprise player this year? Will Brads take the surprise offensive spot previously held by Tomas Fleischmann and Brooks Laich? Doubtful, but what a start for Bradley.
