October 15th, 1988: The Infamous Kirk Gibson HR Game

21 years ago today, an injured Kirk Gibson hit one of the most dramatic homeruns in baseball history.  With 2 outs in bottom of 9th, the pinch-hitting Gibson hit a 2 run HR to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 win in first game of World Series against Dennis Eckersley’s mullet and the Oakland A’s.

Frankly, there are no words that we can add to make this moment any greater, so we’ll leave it up to YouTube.  Since us Midwesterns are used to hearing Jack Buck’s signature call for the Gibson homerun, we’ll leave you Vin Scully’s play-by-play.  It’s a toss up which call is more amazing.

Impress your co-workers: Not wanting the A’s to realize that Gibson was available to punch hit, Tommy Lasorda sent Dave Anderson to the on-deck circle during Mike Davis’ plate appearance. Eckersley decided he would walk Davis to get the Anderson, whose power numbers were much lower than Davis’.  Once Davis was walked, Lasorda fished Gibson from the dugout stairs.  Simply awesome.
