October 15th, 1988: The Infamous Kirk Gibson HR Game
October 15th, 1988
21 years ago today, an injured Kirk Gibson hit one of the most dramatic homeruns in baseball history.ย With 2 outs in bottom of 9th, the pinch-hitting Gibson hit a 2 run HR to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 win in first game of World Series against Dennis Eckersleyโs mullet and the Oakland Aโs.
Frankly, there are no words that we can add to make this moment any greater, so weโll leave it up to YouTube.ย Since us Midwesterns are used to hearing Jack Buckโs signature call for the Gibson homerun, weโll leave you Vin Scullyโs play-by-play.ย Itโs a toss up which call is more amazing.
Impress your co-workers: Not wanting the Aโs to realize that Gibson was available to punch hit, Tommy Lasorda sent Dave Anderson to the on-deck circle during Mike Davisโ plate appearance. Eckersley decided he would walk Davis to get the Anderson, whose power numbers were much lower than Davisโ.ย Once Davis was walked, Lasorda fished Gibson from the dugout stairs.ย Simply awesome.
