October 15th, 1988

21 years ago today, an injured Kirk Gibson hit one of the most dramatic homeruns in baseball history.ย  With 2 outs in bottom of 9th, the pinch-hitting Gibson hit a 2 run HR to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 win in first game of World Series against Dennis Eckersleyโ€™s mullet and the Oakland Aโ€™s.

Frankly, there are no words that we can add to make this moment any greater, so weโ€™ll leave it up to YouTube.ย  Since us Midwesterns are used to hearing Jack Buckโ€™s signature call for the Gibson homerun, weโ€™ll leave you Vin Scullyโ€™s play-by-play.ย  Itโ€™s a toss up which call is more amazing.

Impress your co-workers: Not wanting the Aโ€™s to realize that Gibson was available to punch hit, Tommy Lasorda sent Dave Anderson to the on-deck circle during Mike Davisโ€™ plate appearance. Eckersley decided he would walk Davis to get the Anderson, whose power numbers were much lower than Davisโ€™.ย  Once Davis was walked, Lasorda fished Gibson from the dugout stairs.ย  Simply awesome.
