WWE Rumors: Examining Latest Buzz Around Rey Mysterio, Mae Young Classic, More

Erik BeastonJul 18, 2017

Just 24 hours after one of the bright athletic stars in WWE was revealed to be the storyline illegitimate son of Kurt Angle, it was a future Hall of Famer and all-time great who stole headlines and dominated the rumor mill.

Rey Mysterio, a two-time world champion who was one of the dominant forces in WWE during the 2000s, is eyeing a potential return to WWE. Currently negotiating with the company as well as another prominent promotion, he could be on his way back to performing for a worldwide audience.

Jason Jordan, the aforementioned young star suddenly in the midst of the highest-profile storyline he has ever appeared in, was also the subject of rumors as details on his program with the Raw general manager leaked online.

The recently taped Mae Young Classic women's tournament rounds out this week's rumors with a bit of infuriating speculation.

Rey Mysterio Negotiating for a Return

1 of 3

Former two-time world champion Rey Mysterio is negotiating with WWE for a return to the company in which he experienced his greatest success, according to Sports Illustrated. Vince McMahon's sports entertainment empire is not the only promotion with its eyes on the future Hall of Famer, the report reveals.

"There is strong incentive for both companies to make Mysterio an offer he cannot refuse," Justin Barrasso wrote. "WWE needs a big Latino star as well as a great ambassador to Latin America. GFW/Impact is very motivated to move away from Alberto El Patron and generate some positive headlines by inking the legendary Mysterio."

It is no surprise WWE continues to target the Latino fanbase. It previously leaned on Mysterio to be an ambassador in the past and signed Del Rio, Mistico, Hunico and Kalisto to help carry the mantle after The Master of the 619 left.

It is also of no great shock that Global Force Wrestling would be eager to acquire Mysterio's services. Regardless of the reasoning behind it, he is an iconic figure that fans new and old recognize. He could very well bring eyes to that brand that have not been there in recent years.

Beyond the connection with the Latino fanbase is the credibility and star power Mysterio would lend to a WWE roster in need of it. He is a star on the level of Kurt Angle, Triple H and Chris Jericho. He is every bit as recognizable as those industry icons.

Coming back to WWE, working with the young stars of tomorrow and lending his credibility to a roster that could use an injection of it would provide Mysterio with a much more gracious exit than his last, which saw him slink away a former star rather than a celebrated icon.

Jason Jordan Storyline to Be Lengthy

2 of 3

According to Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet, the storyline involving illegitimate son Jason Jordan and father Kurt Angle will be a lengthy one: "Sources with direct knowledge tell us Jordan is set for a solid midcard level push following the reveal on Raw this week—in which Angle announced Jordan is his son—and his relationship with Kurt will grow as the Olympic athlete tries to be a father figure for Jason."

While it is somewhat refreshing to hear WWE Creative has legitimate, long-term plans for Jordan, the idea that he is being pigeonholed into a midcard role is disappointing. What is the point of devoting the television time and a rather significant mystery angle to a guy who is going to be shoved into a middle-of-the-card role with seemingly no upward mobility?

As for American Alpha, Satin reports the team is through: "As for Jordan's tag team American Alpha, it appears to be done for good. We're told there aren't any immediate plans to bring Chad Gable over to Raw."

It feels as though Gable and Jordan have a ton of unfinished business as a tag team. They won the SmackDown tag titles but never really achieved the greatness they were poised for coming out of NXT. Perhaps, as booking suggests now, that is due to a desire to push them as singles entities on the part of an office looking for the right time and place to instigate a split.

Whatever the case may be, Jordan has an incredible opportunity to become a star bigger than he ever could have imagined. It is up to him, Angle and WWE Creative to make up for a rather lackluster revelation in the weeks to come.

Officials Worried About Mae Young Classic?

3 of 3

While Twitter was buzzing over Thursday's and Friday's Mae Young Classic, Cageside Seats reports there are some officials inside the company with some considerably ridiculous concerns: "There were reportedly mixed reactions to the Mae Young Classic among WWE officials, with some concerned all the competitors weren't up to the company's standards for attractiveness."

At a time when the companywide initiative for female equality has sparked a so-called Women's Revolution, the idea that there are those within the promotion concerned with the attractiveness of the female performers rather than their in-ring ability is ludicrous.

By holding women to a standard in which attractiveness determines their success in the industry, the company and its officials completely and utterly unravel all of the good they have done to promote opportunity for women in sports entertainment.

It is wholly hypocritical and unfair.

For the sake of WWE and its attempts to pat itself on the back for its progression in terms of presenting women's wrestling on par with men's, one can only hope this is an erroneous report.
