Otto Porter Rumors: Wizards to Make 'Aggressive' Contract Offer to Retain RFA

Mike ChiariJun 30, 2017

The Undefeated's Mike Wise reported Friday that the Washington Wizards will make small forward Otto Porter Jr. an "aggressive offer" when free agency opens Saturday in an effort to retain him.

Wise added that the Wiz will also match any offer sheet Porter may potentially sign as a restricted free agent.

Porter has improved in each of his four NBA seasons, and he is coming off his best campaign to date.

The 24-year-old averaged 13.4 points, 6.4 assists, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game as a complementary player to John Wall and Bradley Beal.

Porter also shot 51.6 percent from the field, 43.4 percent from deep and 83.2 percent from the free-throw line, all of which were career bests.

The 2013 No. 3 overall pick's development was a big reason why Washington was able to return to the playoffs in 2016-17 and advance to the second round.

Washington has some depth at small forward with 2015 first-round pick Kelly Oubre Jr. also on the squad, but he is still very much in the middle of his development curve.

Behind Wall and Beal, it can be argued that Porter is Washington's most important player due to his two-way game and the significant improvements he has made on the offensive end.

Porter stands to receive some huge offers in free agency, but every indication is that Washington will keep him in hopes of his continued strides soon making him part of a legitimate "Big Three" with Wall and Beal.
