Chelsea Transfer News: Kostas Manolas Linked, Latest on Nathan Ake Exit

Christopher SimpsonJun 29, 2017

Chelsea are reportedly monitoring AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas amid speculation his proposed move to Zenit St. Petersburg has stalled over his wage demands.

According to the Telegraph's Matt Law, he was supposed to complete a £26 million move to the Russian club on Wednesday, but a disagreement over wages has caught Chelsea's attention as they get ready to offload Nathan Ake to Bournemouth for £20 million.

The Blues have not yet made a direct enquiry about Manolas, but they could pounce if his switch to Zenit breaks down.

Per Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol, the dispute over Manolas' pay is not over how much he wants, but rather the currency he wants it paid in:

Failing to appear for his medical as a result isn't likely to be conducive to helping smooth the path to a deal, so it's of little surprise the Blues are interested in his situation.

The Greece international has enjoyed three excellent years with the Giallorossi and shown his aerial power during that time, per Squawka Football:

His reading of the game is impressive, and he has the strength and pace to thrive in English football. He also likes to bring the ball out from the back with his strong distribution and footwork.

As such, it's somewhat surprising he is on the verge of joining Zenit, when he could feature for a whole host of more illustrious UEFA Champions League sides.

What currency he is paid in would appear to be a relatively minor sticking point, but what could be a bigger issue is his absence from the medical.

The deal could still go through, but the Blues are wise to keep tabs on the situation should an opportunity to hijack the move arise.

Meanwhile, per the Guardian's Stuart James, Ake's move is believed to be imminent:

The 22-year-old spent the first half of last season on loan with the Cherries, and such was his form he was recalled by Chelsea in January.

As Squawka Football demonstrated, he was assured in possession at the Vitality Stadium:

However, he made just five appearances for the Blues upon his return.

Ake is an excellent prospect, but it's clear he has little future at Stamford Bridge so he's wise to move on, and Bournemouth are a strong choice having given him a platform to excel last year.

He's an excellent capture for the Cherries, who will hope he can help them further establish themselves as Premier League regulars.
