Lakers News: Miles Simon Hired as Assistant Coach for LA

The Los Angeles Lakers announced the hiring of ESPN college basketball analyst Miles Simon as an assistant coach under Luke Walton on Tuesday.

Simon, 41, most recently served as the head coach for the 2017 USA Junior National Select Team at the Nike Hoops Summit. He also spent three seasons (2005-08) as an assistant coach at Arizona under Lute Olson and has worked as a coach within USA Basketball each of the last three years.

"I'm so thankful and blessed to be able to have this opportunity to work for such a great franchise like the Lakers," Simon said on Twitter.

Simon joins a coaching staff that included Jud Buechler, Will Scott, Brian Keefe, Theo Robertson and Jesse Mermuys during the 2016-17 season. The team has not formally announced any changes to its staff for next season, so it's unclear if Simon is joining as an extra hand on the bench or replacing a departure.

A former standout at Arizona, Simon won the Most Outstanding Player Award at the 1997 NCAA tournament. He went on to become a second-round pick and play for the Orlando Magic for one season before spending time overseas.

Simon has never coached at the NBA level.
