4-Star QB Spencer Rattler Commits to Oklahoma over USC

Joseph ZuckerJun 27, 2017

Spencer Rattler announced Tuesday on Twitter he committed to the Oklahoma Sooners.

According to Scout, Rattler is a 4-star recruit, the No. 51 player overall and the No. 4 quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class. Through his first two years at Pinnacle High School, the Phoenix native has thrown for 5,274 yards and 48 touchdowns, per MaxPreps.

He also showed nice mobility as a sophomore, running for 462 yards and five touchdowns on 77 carries.

Lincoln Riley proved his recruiting acumen—especially with quarterbacks—shortly after arriving as the offensive coordinator in 2015. Still, some questioned whether Riley could duplicate Bob Stoops' success on the recruiting trail after replacing him as head coach in early June.

The fact Rattler is willing to pledge his future to Oklahoma well over a year before national signing day for the 2019 class is a show of faith in the direction he believes the Sooners are headed under Riley.

Baker Mayfield will leave big shoes to fill when he wraps up his final season.

Oklahoma is bringing in Chris Robison as part of its 2017 class. Robison was the 10th-best quarterback in the country in his class, according to Scout. The two-year gap between Robison and Rattler should give both players ample opportunity to shine in Norman.

In Robison and Rattler, the Sooners already have a clear succession plan for the seasons ahead.
