Manchester United Transfer News: Spurs Demand £50M for Eric Dier, Top Rumours
Manchester United have been quoted a price of £50 million for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier.
According to Sam Wallace of the Telegraph, Spurs will hold out for the huge fee as United boss Jose Mourinho targets a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick. The self-proclaimed Special One wants the England international in his squad for the start of the new campaign. The fee is much larger than United's expectations, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy known to drive a hard bargain.
Dier can play a number of vital roles, including defensive midfield, centre-back and full-back.

Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino has taken the player's game to the next level in recent seasons, and the coach recently informed Dier it is he who has "provided [him with] all the tools" to become a top talent in English football, per Wallace. Dier penned a £70,000-per-week deal with Spurs in September but could double his money if he moves to Old Trafford.
Despite the big-money link, journalist Shaun Custis told BBC 5 live Sport he thinks the player is overrated:
It is obvious why Mourinho wants to draft a replacement for the ageing legs of Carrick, but it is questionable whether Dier is a good long-term option.
He has improved at White Hart Lane over the past few years, but whether he has the tools to allow Paul Pogba to play a more advanced role is debatable.
However, Dier has become a mainstay for a Spurs team that has challenged for the title in each of the past two campaigns, but £50 million is a huge price to pay for a defensive midfielder.

In other United news, Marcelo Brozovic could be about to move to the Theatre of Dreams after Inter Milan reduced their asking price for the midfielder.
According to Calciomercato (h/t Mark Brus of Metro), the Croatian might be available for £22 million after Inter initially priced him at £43 million, which is the value of the player's release clause. Everton are also in the hunt for Brozovic as they spend big on rebuilding their squad.
The 24-year-old made 23 appearances in Serie A last season, scoring four goals, according to WhoScored.com.
