Second seed Grigor Dimitrov was shocked by Pole Jerzy Janowicz at the 2017 Mercedes Open in Stuttgart on Thursday. The latter won in straight sets after surviving a tiebreak in the first to reach the quarter-final.
While Dimitov stumbled to a shock early exit, third seed Tomas Berdych made it through to the last eight after beating Australian Bernard Tomic. Elsewhere, Feliciano Lopez sent Jeremy Chardy out after three sets between unseeded players, and Benoit Paire saw off Peter Gojowczyk in straight sets.

Recap
A formidable service game helped Janowicz overwhelm Dimitrov. The Pole's numbers on first serve were as impressive as his tally of aces, per ATP Media Info:
Ironically, Dimitrov was also dominant on serve:
However, it was the Bulgarian's inability to break serve that proved decisive, with Janowicz saving a trio of break points to stay in control.
There was equal drama during the tilt between Berdych and Tomic. The former boomed 14 aces and converted three of six break points to win the overall service battle.
Yet it still took a tiebreak to claim the first set, with Berdych eventually winning 7-6(4). Things were much more comprehensive for the Czech Republic player in the second set, which he took 6-2.
Berdych now faces a familiar foe in the quarter-final:
Lopez booked his place in the last eight after outlasting Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. The latter lost the first set 6-3 but won the second by the same score.
It meant it was left to a third set to decide things. Yet despite the pressure, Lopez was in imperious form, winning 6-2.
He took a step toward sealing both the set and the match with this fine shot, relayed by the tournament's official Twitter account:
The day's final match saw Paire make quick work of Gojowczyk. The 28-year-old steamrolled through the first set 6-2, but he nearly blew a 5-2 lead in the second when Gojowczyk battled back to 5-4.
Needing to rally, Paire took the decisive final game on serve to ensure a meeting with Janowicz. However, history is not on the Frenchman's side:
Attention will now turn to an intriguing set of matches for the last eight. Berdych has to be the favourite to go on and win the prize following Dimitrov's exit.
However, with Roger Federer and Dimitrov dumped out, this tournament has proved no top seed is safe.
