Maria Sharapova Ruled out of Wimbledon, Grass-Court Season with Muscle Injury
Maria Sharapova has been ruled out for Wimbledon and the 2017 grass-court season after a scan showed the muscle injury she previously suffered in Rome won't allow her to compete in qualifying for the year's third Grand Slam event.
Sharapova's complete statement can be viewed below:
In May, Sharapova announced she planned to compete in the 2017 Birmingham Classic after receiving a wild card and compete for a spot at Wimbledon through qualifying in Roehampton.
However, those plans have now been derailed after a thigh injury—which she suffered at the Italian Open last month—didn't heal in time.
Sharapova, who is 2-2 since returning from a 15-month suspension for a failed drug test, will now miss her sixth major in a row, according to Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim.
If the injury heals correctly, she should return to the court for the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California, which beings July 31.
