Scotland booked their spot in the semi-finals by finishing as the best second-placed team in the tournament. A loss on the first matchday against the Czech Republic was offset by an upset win over Brazil, and Tuesday's victory against Indonesia put the team into the next round.
The team is mostly made up of domestic talent, although its biggest star, Oliver Burke, moved to RB Leipzig last summer. OptaJohan's Michiel Jongsma was impressed when he watched the 20-year-old take on Brazil:
The England team is mostly bereft of star power due to the 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in South Korea, a tournament that has a higher priority. With most of the top players active in Asia―the team will meet Italy in the semi-finals of that tournament―George Hirst has carried the torch for the side playing in Toulon.
The Sheffield Wednesday man is tied with Angola's Chico Banza as the tournament's leading scorer, having bagged four goals already. Three of those came against Cuba in the group stage, and he maintained his fine form in the next outing against Japan, where he added another strike to his tally.
England have the more balanced side and a slight edge in overall quality, but they've yet to face a player of Burke's calibre. The youngster already has bags of experience playing against senior professionals and is built like a tank, as you can see in this video:
His ankle should be healed by Thursday―he was on the bench for the win against Indonesia―and if he starts, he could prove the difference-maker for the Scots.
Prediction: With Burke on the pitch, Scotland grab the win over their archrivals. England 1-2 Scotland
